World Wind is a free open source virtual globe developed by NASA and open source community for use on personal computers. Extraterrestrial datasets are available. The program overlays NASA and USGS satellite imagery, aerial photography, topographic maps and publicly available GIS data on 3D models of the Earth and other planets.

Great clip but I tried World Wind last year and couldn't for the life of me work out how to use it. For ease of use I'd choose Google Earth. The size of the programme was immense too, my computer started sweating.

Moral of the story - Thick twats with shit PCs should stick to the basics.

How is this a google earth killer? I don't think the ability to see mars in 3d is all that important in my everyday life and nasa doesn't have sub 1 meter resolution data for earth on this. two totally different products.

I had both World Wind and Google Earth, then I noticed World Wind was taking up about 50 times as much space and thought "screw that."

Why pick one or the other? They both have different uses, I keep both installed. Most of the time though I get tired of World Wind being god aweful slow, weird glitches, low texture & terrain detail and go back to Google Earth. Having the other planets & SDSS data is very cool though.

another in agreement on google earth being more enjoyable. the 'make your own paths' and 'add pictures from this spot in the world' are pretty intensely cool. they're texturing a lot of building these days, too, which is really cool. ... and i can see my car on google earth.

Worldwind is awesome from a mere geographical perspective. I could spend hours exploring the Moon/Mars with this neat proggy.

I just use the "Earth" map in Civilizations 4. I can zoom right in and see the actual Pyramids, which were apparently built in Tokyo.
