Really? He seemed like a smarmy attention whore to me. His megaphone legal analysis is not very impressive. What does he think he's going to accomplish there? He's trying "teach" the cops or something? They shouldn't be your target audience if you have grievances with the G20 leaders.
This whole spectacle is stupid. It's 90% photographers and cops. It's theater and "meta protest".
The police vehicle was pretty interesting, though.

Anyone know exactly what this demonstration was about or in regards to? Or what the police officers are doing in gear and marching to disperse a crowd?
Yeah, at first I found it odd that nowhere in the description here or on youtube is there any hint of what the protesters were on about. But after a little digging it seems that it was a protest of the G20 meeting. http://www.nytimes.com/2009/09/27/world/27protest.html?hpw
What makes it confusing is that a myriad of groups, each with their own very different causes are protesting at the same time. The guy on the loudspeaker is apparently 9/11 conspiracy theorist (from youtube description). There were also anti-war protesters, free Tibet protesters, Palestinian occupation protesters, anti-capitalism protesters, environmentalists, Falun Gong (an oppressed Chinese religious group) protesters, anarchists, and a steel workers union. . . protesting something, I'm guessing people not buying enough steel.
It's disgusting to see jackbooted police in the streets of America. This is certainly the slow creep of fascism. And it's as if they don't even care that they're a blatant parody of Nazis at this point! It's ridiculous.
When George Lucas wrote Star Wars it was a comment against the Vietnam War. When creating the 'Empire' he wanted everything to be stark black and white and red, which was to symbolize Nazis. So, inside the various ships you'll note the colors are very stark, as are the uniforms. Looking at this video, however, is it not ironic, too, that they're wearing black and white uniforms?
Take into account the numbers of each group, and the willingness to engage in violent civil disobedience, and it makes sense (to me at least) that there would be much more cops at this event.
I think the police presence is a consequence of something more basic: The G20 was a protest, 9/12 was a photo-op.
The folk who showed up to the G20, even the died in the wool pacifists, went with intent to challenge the power of the state, to obstruct a meeting of high officials, the kind of thing the first amendment was written to protect.
The folk who showed up for 9/12, even the died in the wool gun toting "revolutionaries", went with the intent to pose for a photo op with FOX NEWS/GOP, not to exercise their first amendment right, not to challenge the state in any concrete way, which is why the government doesn't really care.
As for the damage, it would have been more localized if they had allowed them to get to the convention center, and it would have cost less then the million or so they spent to bring an extra 4000 officers into the city.
The FuckShitUp crowd usually focuses on destroying barricades, and other structured designed to deny the protesters their rights, and I support that kind of vandalism. The other kind would be easier to punish if the police didn't spend so much time making sure the protesters were spread out from here to sunday, just video the hell out of the convention center and strategically arrest vandals.

Anyone ever notice that the vast majority of these videos are from truly liberal protests, yet we never see even the slightest police presence when the gun-toting right wing protesters come out?
Oh, there is definitely a police presence at right-wing demonstrations... they just bring signs instead of uniforms.

If protesters block the streets or if too many cars block the streets you have the same result: blocked streets. Why is one illegal and the other not? The streets are public. You might say pedestrians don't belong on the streets so should protesters be on bikes?
