you need to actually bend your knees and give some lift in order to actually flip properly.
Well, as a guy who turned 32 yesterday, I can vouch for the fact that the amount of knee bending you needed at 18 is MUCH less than the amount of knee bending you need at.. say.. 32.

And the knees are harder to bend as well.
Actually I never ever mastered the frontflip myself. I only landed it once and then I overspun it. All the other time I just land on my butt.
That's weird, because I can do backflip which is sort of "harder".
