There's a similiar post up showing the oft-deified Bill Hicks blowing up at a heckler. The post makes referernce to "successfully" handling the situation - but what he does is repeatedly scream that the woman is a "cunt." Is the word (or concept) "nigger" the only thing that crosses some sort of line?

I note the presence of the idiot audience that Letterman and his guests seem to have to endure. Laughing at anything and everything. I remember an interview with Val Kilmer once where Val was mentioning how his mother had died recently, to which there were giggles in the audience!

It was good to hear someone off-camera* telling them it wasn't funny, in the full video off the CBS site.

*that is, Firefox didn't seem to be displaying the stream properly, it may have been Seinfeld who said that.

not particularly racist. just bad temper and non-classy. uses the word 'crap' to sum up the whole thing. not that particularly classy person, but neither is he racist i thinks.

It wasn't the best decision to do this on Letterman. I think a short segment on a news show may have been more appropriate.

I don't think he's racist either, I think he's a frustrated and bitter actor who is suffering from child-star syndrome (a.k.a. Bob Denver syndrome) where he had an incredibly successful run on a tv show and has now been type cast and can't find work.

This episode pretty much destroyed his reputation and he'll have to start from the bottom again.
