Mentos, The Freshmaker (and no Diet Coke)

Mentos definitely does NOT help this kid find the cool solution. This is so bad.
Kruposays...

Egh, *nochannel, I don't see comedy here AT ALL.

BTW, issykitty, terrible is for commercial production - places where a real money is involved and someone gave it a greenlight. Hence the original name, "terrible, who gave that a green light" for the collective that spawned the channel.

*parody, *wtf, *actionpack

I don't think you want kids seeing this, *nsfw

Wow, you guys and gals really hate this one, don't ya? I don't take it personally, because I know this kind of thing pushes the boundaries of taste. However I don't think it's misogynistic or pro-violence. After the guy punches the girl his shocked and horrified friends immediately come over to pull him off her. Not exactly a ringing endorsement of his behavior, right?

I laughed when I first saw this because I was completely surprised by the punch. That's where I saw the humor, NOT because he was hitting a girl who rejected him. Plus Mentos commercials were so wholesomely corny to start with that a punch in the face was absolutely the last thing I expected. Again, it was the surprise that made me giggle, not the violent retribution itself.

Having said all that I can see how some would find this offensive or just plain stupid. I'm sorry if it has offended anyone, because I'm not a misogynist, nor am I a violent person in any way. Maybe I should have let it die instead of requeuing it. Oh well, comedy is always at least a little risky anyway. Safe comedy is just boring, n'est-ce pas?

Thylansays...

I think a culture of "Violence is bad" would be a good thing. Not being facetious, I'm thinking in terms of philosophy and the ramifications of such (its not quite the same as pacifism, which i consider desirable, but not always the solution. I have a rage towards rapists etc.)

Violence has often been a part of comedy. In some forms it can be funny for many (How-Not-to-Be-Seen) but where it's less farcical/exaggerated and more slapstic/real (e.g. Bottom, best of) it feels different, and I actually never liked the comedy violence in bottom. Monty Pythons Holy Grail has a classic use of the absurd to make the fight with the Black Knight funny, but the staged Tom and Jerry violence of Bottom struck a very different tone. I think i actually saw them live once, and aside form being impressed by how real it looked, but wasn't; it just felt bad.

This feels worse. If I had my star yet, I'd down vote too.

Drink driving used to be considered socially acceptable, and only frowned on like a slap on the wrist, so people felt ok doing it, and did. Over time that attitude has changed in the UK, and for many drink driving is taboo (not completely, alas) and alcohol related injury statistics have improved (I checked http://www.statistics.gov.uk/ to confirm). If we can change peoples attitude to violence, taking it more seriously and negatively, (especially violence against women, and domestic violence, where i include violence against men too) then perhaps less of it would happen...

To quote -http://www.wikihow.com/Be-Funny : There is some consensus, however, that the humor response is similar to the fear response, and thus the unknown, the surprising, and the incongruous are often funny.
-End quote.

True comedy uses a lot more than just SURPRISE! *custard pie*, and this should be seen for what it is. Bad comedy plus a bad and serious act that should not be trivialized by this staged setting.

kronosposeidonsays...

After reading some thoughtful comments, and also some serious consideration on my own part, I've decided to voluntarily pull the plug on this video. I thought I'd keep it up just to read the comments, but it's not a video I feel passionately about so therefore it's not really worth it. This kind of video is worth defending on its artistic merits, even with its violent content, but not a Mentos spoof.

I haven't seen something this despised since Jar Jar Binks made his cinematic debut. C'est la vie.

i laughed. could have been funny if roles were reversed and she broke out mace, or if it was self-harm via a fake knife to the wrists... he goes back up to her, pulls out a knife, starts sobbing and cutting his wrists while everybody else starts freaking out.

Kruposays...

Thanks kronos - like bamdrew said, there are ways this concept could've worked, and I also see what you mean about how they wanted this one to be funny.

In the end, I think it was *too "realistic"* to be funny. If there was some cartoony-over-the-top violence, that wouldn't have engendered the same response (i.e., using a HalfLife Gravity Gun or something to do something silly).

As it stood, what generated the unusually passionate response on my end was the fact that this cuts way too close to home because it still does happen, sadly.

Good conversation, though.

Kruposays...

Oh man, I'm still laughing at the wrist-slitting thing. I mean, in that case, it's also something that happens in real life, but the context would be so bizarre (doing it in public, for starters), that it could be pulled off. Well, again, you can pull anything off, but it takes a bit more skill sometimes when it's edgy.

Now I go back to watching Violent Cop... man, the chase scene from that movie should get sifted...

jonnysays...

I'm gonna *save this just for thread.

And I think it's funny as hell. The absurdity, the timing, the twist - it just works. More so because it's dark, creating the ridiculous comparison with original commercials.

Starting out this time with 12 upvotes and 10 downs - good luck little viddy.

Saving this video from the discard pile and sending it back to the queue for one more try; last queued Saturday, October 27th, 2007 11:37am PDT - save requested by jonny.

kronosposeidonsays...

I appreciate it jonny, I really do, but I really don't want this one resurrected. I still think it's funny because I often find off-the-wall shit like this humorous, but it's not something I feel strongly enough about to fight for. Thanks all the same.
