Man attacks police car by running at it with a knife
tags:September 19, 2008 - Nevada, Iowa: Man attacks two police officers by chasing their vehicles down the street with a knife.
If you want to know more, you can get more from the dashboard cam source video and the CNN version on CNN.com has a slightly better resolution than this one.
Since I'm unsure if the man was mentally unstable, high, or both, I'm leaving this out of *eia and *drugs.

Awwwweeeeesssooommmmeee
Right as he gets hit by the car you can see his shoe fly off...
What's your alternative? Get out of the car and try and Taser him from close range as he charges you? No, that's not reasonable. The only alternative is shooting him. And incapacitating him with a moderate speed collision seems more humane, actually.
Besides... if the guy was chasing the cars... then they could have kept the speed just faster than the guy could run... and wouldn't that be something for the squad house video collection.
There is no way the guy could have gotten into the car.
When you there is a 10 - 80 and possible 10-95(mental), that doesn't give the uniform the authority to 10 57.
One car to distract and the other Uniform to bean bag... multiple times.
Non lethal grenade launcher bean bag rifle. They pack the moderate speed collision rychan is looking for.
Move the cars to opposite ends of the lot. The officer of whichever car he doesn't pursue can safely get out and draw a gun at that point. Have a TASER or other LLW ready as well. If he doesn't comply, you do what you have to.
If he had a gun then I'd be all for hitting him... probably repeatedly.
@rychan - Yes, I do think it's reasonable to expect an officer to use a TASER in this case. Is it risky? Hell yes, but this idea that police officers should never have to go into a risky situation is bullshit. It's their fucking job to go into risky situations and resolve them to protect the rest of us.
In all honesty, this is one of those situations where they can use leathal force. He had made theats to others already and charge a police car with a weapon drawn...walking dead man after that.

You don't think he's perhaps suffering mental illness or under the influence of drugs? In which case this is an incident he may well regret later, or at least be helped to overcome in some way?
From what we're told in the video he hasn't actually harmed any one yet, and poses no immediate threat to the officers or anyone else we can see nearby. And you think he should die.
That's mighty GeeSuss like of you.

From what we're told in the video, knifey "had already assaulted people in the neighborhood" but that is coming from an officer defending his colleagues actions.
And I disagree that he posed no immediate threat to the officers. I mean, he jumped on a squad car and tried to open the driver side door knife in hand.
Its not pretty.
Deep slashes all over their chest / back, fingers almost completely sliced off, face all cut up, and Im not talking just little nicks, it looks like someone had taken a butchers knife to them and was preparing a 5 course meal.
They did the only thing reasonable, and put that guy out of commission without injuring or placing anyone else in harms way.
You simply do not have the time to pull a gun on a guy running at you with a knife, you will get fucked up.
Don't bring a knife to a gun fight....isn't always necessarily true.
You may get off a shot, but you'll be truly fucked up by the time the guy drops.
don't bring a knife to a car fight
lmfao
One bad officer can destroy the reputation of the of 10 good officers.
The problem with officers is that some of them have a violence fetish, and the uniform, gun and bylaws protect them.
It should be every righteous officers duty to oust every bad seed, so as to build up a reputation for his or her precinct that will make the citizenry feel safe.
Here it is: Don't break the law. That goes for the officers, you are protected only as long as the citizenry support you.
I do not support those that break the law, even officers of the law. I do however expect those officers to show restraint, and knowledge of a person's rights (provided they are not in the felony zone). The uniform and the gun do not give the officer the right to do what ever they want.
If you want a free for all, better go to a country that doesn't have a constitution.
the criminal is evolution in action.
