A short summary of how to make a fire with a standard bow and drill.

The bow is premade before the video, however it is easy to assemble. While this guy uses a candle holder as a handsocket a piece of soapstone or hardwood with a notch works well in the field.

The only problem is that he never mentioned how to actually work the string around the drill. Granted, it's not that hard to figure out, but if you need to watch a video on youtube to learn how to do this, then chances are you're in pretty bad shape to begin with.

Easy to do with shit you can find in your garage. Much harder to do in a survival situation. Magnesium, firesteels, and waterproof matches are all lighter (than a candlestick holder, anyway), easier, and more reliable. If you don't have those, there are several versions of the method above that all use friction to produce an ember. None are as easy out in the sticks as it looks in the video, without practice.

Agreed Fletch, I was watching Survivorman and he turned me on to a new way of starting a fire (I've used the bow and flint methods) but the compression/piston method and gadget was very interesting.

I just saw that episode. That piston thingy was pretty cool. Never seen that before.
