Letterman Busts McCain for Lying

About 90 minutes before tonight's Letterman taping, McCain's people phoned to say he was suspending his campaign because of the financial crisis legislation and therefore had to cancel doing the show. During the taping producers found McCain being mic'd for Katie Couric. Dave then calls him out on it.

Letterman's speaking a lot of sense lately. The media needs to follow his lead and call McCain's campaign suspension for what it is: campaigning, and gimmicky campaigning at that.

That is some serious, serious heat that Letterman laid on McCain. That's going to freaking hurt in middle America. I'm startled by this.

Of course this is a political stunt. Of course McCain can go to Washington without closing down his campaign office, sending his surrogates home, and canceling all his appointments (oh, what, none of that happened?). But I didn't expect anyone in the main stream media to call him on it.

Yeah, saw this on Drudge earlier today. You'd think the guy would have enough decency to bail out on Dave to, at least, get involved with some substantive interview (if an interview is what constitutes "fixing" the economy). NOT some featherweight nerf contest with Kaytee Kurrhic (which tapes just up the road from Letterman!).

Well, what more proof do we need that McCain is a fucking liar? Liar, liar, liar. AND he's overstating his importance. Is he going to turn the tide? Be the deciding vote? He's not even part of the leadership of his own party. And he's not the chairman of the Senate Finance Committee. Tool! Liar!

I love this because it's being said and shown by someone who middle America love... what Dave says carries a fair whack of weight I'd wager, and I LOVE that McCain's BULLSHIT stunt of 'suspending' campaigning has backfired here.

Basically McCain is doing EVERYTHING he possibly can to avoid actually discussing anything, because he knows that if he does... he loses, because Obama is that much better at talking, has that much more substantive plans, isn't a bold faced lier.

First we get Palin to distract the media for a while, and now we get this.

F*ck I hope that he's called on it and FORCED to do the debates, I really do, and I really hope there aren't any dumbsh*ts who really believe it's 'for the good of the country' that he's doing this shit.

Ya sorry, McCain is no hero. Letterman should've followed his "America needs more heroes like John McCain" line with "used to be." I believe it's possible to lose your hero status if you try hard enough, and McCain certainly has.

Shall we put the election on hold as well?

Maybe declare a state of emergency? Maybe hand over the country to Paulson with a dictatorship immunity from congressional review or.... i don't know... laws?

I think a few bits were left out. From the LA Times, http://latimesblogs.latimes.com/washington/2008/09/mccain-letterma.html

#10 "I just contributed to your campaign – how do I get a refund?"

#9 "It’s Sarah Palin –- does this mean I’m pars’dent?"

#8 "Can’t you solve this by selling some of your houses?"

#7 "This is Clay Aiken. Is McCain single?"

#6 "Do you still think the fundamentals of our economy are strong, Genius?"

#5 "Are you doing all of this just to get out of going on Letterman?"

#4 "What would Matlock do?"

#3 "Hillary here –- my schedule is free Friday night."

#2 "Is this just an excuse to catch up on napping?"

#1 "This is President Bush –- what’s all this trouble with the economy?"

This is just bullshit.

"We're cancelling because the economy is failing" WHAT? What is your drop going to do about that anyway?

This is just a stall tactic, because neither McCain nor Palin would have a chance in a real debate against obama/biden. For shame.

If you want to stop campaigning then CONCEDE.

I'm sick of hearing this crap about how he was so special they offered him early release. They offered most of the prisoners early release (possibly all of them) but you had to sign a statement denouncing America.

Only those prisoners who had a high probability of dying because of medical conditions took early parole with one exception and he was ordered by the ranking officer in the camp to take the release because he was enlisted, did not plan on a career in the military and he knew most of the prisoner's names so he could make a public statement when he got home to the press and the families would know that their loved ones were coming home soon.

Not accepting the early release does NOT make him special, yes it was brave but he was hardly unique or even out of the ordinary for that situation.

^ Also, as a high-ranking officer in that camp, if he took early release before any of his subordinates, he would've been court-marshalled when he got home, and spent years in prison.

www.intrade.com:

John McCain's shock suspension of campaigning has drastically altered the fundamentals on the 2008 Presidential Election Winner contract. The stunt is being met with wide spread selling off of McCain on Intrade, while traders simultaneously ploughed into Obama rocketing his price up to just under 57 [predicted % chance to win]. Obama has now opened up a nearly 13 point lead against his opponent.

McCain's move has been met with widespread disbelief in this morning's media. [...]

Is McCain experiencing a mere wave of panic selling? Can he rebound from 44? Time will tell, but so far traders don't seem to be buying McCain on this dip, nor is anyone taking profits yet on Obama."

Funny that everyone is so anti-McCain that they can't realize that the only thing Obama is good at is public speaking. He's spent his entire time in Senate running so essentially he has absolutely no experience. Sure he's a good public speaker but that isn't going to do shit when it comes to actually fixing the economy.

I would rather have someone who is intelligent enough to give extremely articulate speeches and listen to reason than a geriatric with blinders on who has absolutely no idea what is going on in the world. McCain called us a country of whiners a few months ago... are we still whining now that our economy is VERIFIABLY in the toilet?

What I don't get is this: we are clearly a country married to our parties. After 8 years of Replublicans, what does it take for people to divorce themselves from their parties? We are stuck in a useless war, our economy is destroyed, the world hates us, why on earth would you want to give the next 4 to 8 years to the Republicans again?

Don't even get me started on the Voodoo Economics of the bailout.

We *are* a country of whiners. People are ALWAYS complaining about something. Nobody is ever happy and everyone is waiting for our leaders to screw up. I'm sure if Obama is elected it won't be long before people start griping about how Obama runs things.

I think I'm ahead of the curve on this -- I've already started complaining about how Obama is running things (*cough* FISA Amendment Act). That doesn't change the fact that the "Nation of whiners" comment was despicable... The implication was not that Americans like to complain, but that the economic woes of the country are all in our head (mental recession, anyone?). It really burns when the guy who practically architected the collapse tries to blame his own failed policies on some imagined fault of the American people.

For the record, the "just a public speaker" comment comes up short too. Ignoring for a moment all of the work he has done for his degree in law, his time in the Illinois State Senate, and as a community organizer (for Chicago's South Side!), he still has an impressive U.S. Senate record. Sponsoring 136 bills is not exactly the sign of someone who does nothing but public speaking.

Obama got ways to fuck you up too. The fact that Obama covers his tracks in a more elegant manner worries me about as much as the fact that McCain might win by lying openly.

leaving aside the fact that all politicians are scum if they get that close to the top...

the difference is that if mccain destrys america more, his supporters will thank jesus for it.
if(when) obama puts a foot wrong, a shitload of angry betrayed gullible fools are gonna get angry on his ass.

so there, vote obama, the candidate most likely to be kept in check by his supporters.

or, don't vote because the whole thing is a perversion and voting makes you dirty.

Sure he's a good public speaker but that isn't going to do shit when it comes to actually fixing the economy.

What we all need right now is change and with it, the hope of a dream. I am dreaming that change will be in the well of hope, that we might all stand together in unity, because the opposite of that unity is standing apart. Many Black Americans didn't have the same opportunities as I, because like me they were not on the dollar bills. Those people on the dollar bills appear all in green, and as I must remind you every two minutes, I am partly African- American in background so if I am accused of being green, that cannot be the hopeful change we all seek to unify.

My plan to tax ONLY "the rich" will surely not harm you middle class and lower income people, the same way leaving a sunflower in darkness and giving it very little water will not stunt its growth. We are all interconnected in unity until it's time to blame others for the failures of still others. Do not ask me about issues, I am busy having a dream, always having a dream of hope and can't be bothered with clarity that doesn't unify the message of change!

you're right QM, the rich need all the help they can get.

For example if we start enforcing accountability for CEOs who fuck up their companies and leave, nobody will want to fuck up a company anymore, there will be no CEOs, and the rich will be unemployed, which would obviously mess up the bell curve.

The best thing is if all the poor people give everything they have to the bank, and the wise bank owners decide how to trickle the money back to the poor people.

I see your point.
