Christ gave winter solstice meaning? Nice try, the church declared Christ's birthday as dec. 25th to curtail all the pagan celebrations during the winter solstice and give the people something christian to celebrate. From what I understand a lot of biblical scholars think his birth was in the spring. So basically the church stole the meaning of winter solstice for their own, and in doing so probably created some sort of blasphemy by their own standards.

holy f_ck! Laura is an idiot. Solstice is why christianity celebrates birth of christ this time of year not the other way around(Jesus was actually born in april as I recall)! Christ died for our sins so no one should worry about going to hell. Probably about the same percentage of christians go help out in afrika as percentage of atheists do. 6 year old kid cannot make up their own mind in her words which is why they shouldn't be indoctrinated. She obviously does not know the meaning of dogma. Was there a single comment she made that wasn't dumb?

Last I checked, "devout" meant deeply religious. "Devout atheist" doesn't mean anything at all to me. Perhaps "dedicated" lol.

Was about to write something similar, but instead I just changed the tags

80% of the country is Chrstian? Where the fuck did she get those made up stats? Christ. Fuck you Fox.

Just look how aggravated and agitated that stupid bitch on the left kept getting further into the attack "interview." Way to be "fair and balanced." Isn't a news organization supposed to be unbiased? Guess things change when the whole basis for your existence is challenged and you have nothing to fight back with other than insults and insinuation, huh?

hpqpsays...

wow, no one has given me such homicidal urges as this braindead bigot has...

One thing that really pisses me off is when christians use the "humanitarian aid" and "charity" argument. All the main and most widespread humanitarian aid groups are secular (UN, CICR, MSF, Amnesty International, etc.), while a lot of those "missionaries" do much more harm than good, feeding on the misery and lack of education of people in need to push their sick beliefs, some of which are counter-humanitarian (I'm looking at you, pope).

Clumsysays...

Honestly, I take pride in knowing that a few billboards rattled her so much. The Fox woman came out swinging, which only shows she's a poor example of a christian, which is too me all to powerful a message against religion and the values they say they abide by. Very big ups to the interviewee who remained calm and collected and presented everything with facts, rather than emotion.

bananafonesays...

"without jesus, your solstice would mean nothing!"

Actually, the christians stole the holiday from the "dirty pagans." Same with Easter, and "All Hallow's Day." People weren't celebrating your shindigs, so you decided to put it on the same day as theirs.

It's like in highschool, a popular kid throws a party at his house and invites all your friends when it's your birthday. No one comes to your birthday because he's got hookers and blow.

Golgisays...

wtf, she only made it 1/3 of the way through the FoxNews S.O.P.

Step 1: make up facts and distort statistics (ignoring simple math when you feel it's appropriate)
Step 2: build yourself into a blind rage so that you can . . .
Step 3: scream at and interrupt your guest of opposing beliefs

BillO can cruise through the 3 steps in a 90 second interview where Laura Ingram failed to do it in 7 minutes. for shame.

jimnmssays...

As a Christian she should be concerned that she's going against her gods command by celebrating "Christmas." The Bible doesn't say when Jesus was born, nor does it say to celebrate his birthday. It does however have this to say:

Thus saith the LORD, Learn not the way of the heathen, and be not dismayed at the signs of heaven; for the heathen are dismayed at them. For the customs of the people are vain: for one cutteth a tree out of the forest, the work of the hands of the workman, with the axe. They deck it with silver and with gold; they fasten it with nails and with hammers, that it move not. They are upright as the palm tree, but speak not: they must needs be borne, because they cannot go. Be not afraid of them; for they cannot do evil, neither also is it in them to do good. (Jeremiah 10:2-4)

Also, Jesus couldn't have bee born on December 25th.
"And she brought forth her firstborn son, and wrapped him in swaddling clothes, and laid him in a manger; because there was no room for them in the inn. And there were in the same country shepherds abiding in the field, keeping watch over their flock by night." (Luke 2:7-8)
Shepherds didn't watch their flocks by night in the winter, so there is no way Jesus would have been born in December.

The irony of hearing: "That's right cause a lot of people would care about the winter solstice if not for this thing called, ugh... Christianity."

For those that are unaware (I'm assuming few on this site) Paul sold Christianity to the masses by conforming their celebrations to their preexisting holidays. In fact, that was the primary reason Christianity gained any foothold. In other words: "That's right cause a lot of people would care about CHRISTIANITY if not for this thing called, ugh... THE WINTER SOLSTICE."

budzossays...

"Yeah, cuz a lot of people would care about the winter solstice is it weren't for this thing called Christianity."

Wow you totally owned her except for the part where you got this completely fucking backwards. Bellicose, man-looking bimbo.

"I mean dogmatic about the part where there is no God."

Okay, so you mean dogmatic with a completely OPPOSITE definition of what dogma is. Deceptive, manipulative, word-twisting harpy.

I literally can't listen to this cunt while looking at her face at the same time.

I didn't enjoy the schoolyard antics from either of these kids, but I have to clarify that dogma "is the established belief or doctrine held by a religion, ideology or any kind of organization: it is authoritative and not to be disputed." It was a correct use of the word, and a real question for an atheist, if they believe in a hard rule stating that god doesn't exist and if they have any dogmatic rules at all (answer to both would be "no").

This is what happens when you get emotional about an intellectual subject--facts slip away from you. If atheism brings the same emotional BS as religion, what the hell is the point? You're reducing an intellectual movement to angsty counter-culture.

You're fucking wrong as hell and I have put you in the dumbass column. ATHEISM IS NOT A RELIGION, IDEOLOGY, OR ORGANIZATION. THUS THERE IS NO DOGMA. Dogma is the enforced beliefs passed down by the authorities within a group. ATHEISM IS NOT A GROUP AND HAS NO AUTHORITIES.

So really, I appreciate the correction, but you're wrong and you're just adding to the problem. So check yourself.

Lodurrsays...

I checked. From here:

"Atheism has two practical meanings: one is the lack of belief concerning God, and the other is the certainty that God does not exist. As such, atheism can be divided into passive atheism and active atheism. Passive atheism is merely the lack of belief, and children are born passive atheists [...]. Active atheists are not people merely lacking a belief in God, but people dogmatically declaring God does not exist"

I never said Ingraham is correct in her statement, I said it was a valid question to be asked of atheists. It seemed like you didn't know what "dogma" actually meant, but if you still think atheism is immune to dogma, you'd have to explain how atheism isn't an -ism and how the Freedom from Religion Foundation isn't an organization.>> ^budzos:
So check yourself.

Would you consider yourself an AStNicolasist?? What about an AEasterBunnyist? What about an Athemoonismadeofbluecheesist? Because it seems you want to group people according to what they DON'T believe, which is nonsense.

Freedom From Religion is a political orgnization.

All that's required to be CALLED an atheist is to disbelieve a stupid fairy tale. I don't believe in Santa Claus, or Jesus, and GREATLY resent being grouped with other people on that basis.

I'm not saying that all "atheists" get it. To me, most atheists are emotionally opposed to religion and consider themselves part of a smug, superior club. I call these people "T-Shirt Wearing Atheists" and consider them actually a bit more moronic than your typical religious adherent.

Lodurrsays...

I thought it was a good quote despite the website it came from. The quote should be judged on its content.

If you say that not all atheists get it, then that supports my point that atheism can be dogmatic, and that it's a valid question to ask of anyone that calls themselves an atheist because there are people out there that misinterpret what it means. If you consider t-shirt wearing atheists to be morons, then what about the billboard-posting variety?

You make a good point about the negative belief groupings, but then why continue using the word "atheist"? There are a lot of philosophies out there that define almost every possible point of view on existence. I think the only motivation to promote atheism is to oppose religions. It's like the ideological No Homers Club (obscure Simpsons reference). For someone not predisposed to hate religions, the anti-religion club doesn't have much to offer.

budzossays...

Yes, I think it's moronic to post billboards against religion. Even if it does advance your cause a few percent, it's not worth the strife. It's plain disrespectful. Not to mention hypocritical. Just live your own reasonable life and let memetics win in the end.

I am relegated to using the word atheist because on a purely semantic level, that's what I am. Unfortunately, most people (even most self-proclaimed atheists, but particularly religious people) cannot see that it's just a word for someone who doesn't believe in any gods. They see that "ist" on the end of the word and think it's akin to being a communist or satanist or objectivist or cubist. In other words they think there MUST be a pernicious agenda attached to the label. And mismatched agendas, or the perception thereof, are the cause of most of the pain and hurt in this world. I don't want to control anyone or even proselytize against religion. If everyone would be cool then everyone could be cool. Atheist as a word is uncommon in that virtually all other commonly used "ist" words are describing what a group DOES believe or DOES practice.

Militant atheism, dogmatic atheism, practicing atheism of any kind is ludicrous and shows one does not get it.

gwiz665says...

I am non-religious (atheist) and anti-religious as well. A lot of trouble comes from people misunderstanding the words, at least among non-religious people, who want to branch off in their own little type of atheism: humanism, secularism, agnostics etc.
