Kids Home Alone Dumbstruck by Big Small Earthquake

It's really neat to see the natural, innocent reactions of these kids to the earthquake on July 29, 2008. The look on the main kid's face when he realizes what's happening is something that can't be bought.

I think this is the first SoCal quake since the advent of YouTube, and it's pretty neat to see so much in-quake video footage available online from so many sources and so many different walks of life.

Having experienced an earthquake (IIRC it was around a 5.5), I can say that the kid's reaction is quite calm. Of course, if it had been a stronger earthquake, I'm sure his reaction would've been more extreme.

This is sad if you ask me. The kid is indicative of the cowardice of children today - hell earthquakes were a thrill when I was that young. He's aping parental concern and acting 'responsibly' like a soccer mom. Where's the child-like awe??

He probably can't help it, what with the hype on media and from his school about earthquake safety. They're taught how to react, how scary it is, to hide under things, to make sure everyone's okay. It pretty much deadens their natural wonder and curiousity to be given information they would've had otherwise - they think, 'Well I was given all the information I need. I shall now react like I was taught.'

As a kid my reaction in every earthquake was to saunter on up to the inside of a door frame and enjoy the ride because I was always at home during quakes. Don't know that I'd call a kid a coward for having his first instinct be to duck and cover especially considering he may have seen lots of buildings collapsing in earthquakes recently from all the China footage online.

Such natural finger pointing is part of why most people feel to embarrassed to react like their life depends on it, even in a life-threatening situation, because they'll be laughed at. I'd rather be made fun of and live than stand stoic and be destroyed.
