Wow... I'm crazy, and all, but this could be seen as a poignant portrayal of the loss of innocence. A cherished childhood figure recanting his decline into drugs.

Talkin' 'bout my generation

I mean, it's goofy and the Cash version is definitely more touching, but this interests me too.

Strangely, this song is still powerful, even with the ridiculous Kermit voice.

As much as I like this, it feels like a non-Jim Henson Production. Can anyone confirm/deny? Only out of curiousity.

wow... that was unexpected. A very well-done work that works a little bit different than the NIN and Cash versions.

I can safely say I never thought I'd see Kermit singing like that, but it works.

/goes to cry in the corner now

I think all of your emotional responses to this are valid, and testament to the power of this song, but -- I think this is meant to be (darK) satire.

It seems to be more of a direct NIN cover to me, rather than a cover of the Cash version. He sings Trent's lyrics, not Johnny's modification.

yeah it definately isn't a henson production..
it's a fan made video, i don't think the henson's would let a childhood icon be used in such a way..

Wow. At first I thought it was just a novelty, somebody's idea of poor taste, but as it went on (and especially when Kermit looks over at Jim Henson's photograph) I really started to feel his pain. In the 70's and 80's The Muppet Show was THE show to be on for celebrities. You knew you had made in in Hollywood when you appeared on The Muppet Show.

( see here for a list of human guests: http://muppet.wikia.com/wiki/Category:Muppet_Show_Episodes )

And now? Well, the world moves on, Disney buys you and shelfs you. SpongeBob and Aqua Teen Hunger Force are here, Kermit is past his prime.

This video touched me.

deadundead; I just wanted to point out that the description seems to suggest that NIN were the authors and not Johnny Cash. Thought you might want to clear up the description a bit. Since NIN are the cover and Cash is the creator.

Holy crap, revisionist music history. Just because Johnny Cash is older doesn't mean he's the creator, Gorgon. NiN IS the creator of this song, Cash made a cover. Cash made covers of a number of popular "current" hits late in life, including one by Soundgarden (yay), I think "Rusty Cage".

I was gonna jump all over the comment that Cash wrote this song, but apparently it's already been done, and is an old comment. but just for clarification:

Nine Inch Nails (Trent Reznor) written in 1994. Released on Downward Spiral.
Johnny Cash covered in 2002. Released on American IV: The Man Comes Around.

Reznor is most definitely the author of this song, and Cash is not the first to cover it either.

Tori Amos frequently sang three or four lines of the song as an introduction to other songs during her Dew Drop Inn tour in 1996, most frequently "Caught a Lite Sneeze", and then again in 1998, as an improvisational bridge.
Breaking Benjamin
Sheryl Crow covered the Cash version on the television special Tribute to Johnny Cash.
Fightstar
Matthew Good, acoustic tour 2006.
Gregorian arranged the lyrics into a medieval Gregorian chant.
Kermit the Frog is featured in an unauthorized parody called "Sad Kermit".
Aaron Lewis of Staind covered the song during his 2007 Have Guitar, Will Travel solo acoustic tour.
Luna Amara
Jeff Martin
Montezuma's Revenge
Placebo, at the House of Blues in California in 2003.
Damien Rice, by inserting lyrics from the song into his live performances.
Underoath played it acoustic live
Sevendust did a cover as a tribute to Johnny Cash.
Howard Stern had his own version for his show, called "Private Hurt". He played the song while mixing in sound clips from his film Private Parts.
Westside Connection sampled the main riff for their song "The Gangsta The Killa and The Dope Dealer".
