I smell some Viacom editing to display John Mccain in a better light. He gets totally owned by Jon Stewart in the second half which Comedy Central choose not to put on Motherload....

Watch the whole thing here http://onegoodmovemedia.org/movies/0704/ds042407mccain.mov (18.2megs)

Yeah, that was some interview. I got uncomfortable for a bit, and I thought Stewart really made some strong points.

it sometimes sometimes seems to me, not being from the U.S, that Stewart is the only intelligent and forthright interviewer in the States. (And him being a host of a comedy show makes it a trifle scary)

I couldnt believe what i was hearing when i was watching this last night. It was funny at the end when McCain tried to run away, he probably thought he was going to get jumped by the audience.

McCain did get a little uncomfortable, I believe he was not ready to answer such difficult questions. Kudos to Stewart for asking about important issues.

It's why people are getting their news from John Stewart, Bill Maher, and Stephen Colbert. The comedians are the only place you can go these days for serious news. Though Bill Moyers isn't bad either. Here's a segiment of a piece I wrote on this...

Jon Stewart, Stephen Colbert, and Bill Maher are often excellent sources of information on current world affairs. Studies have shown that viewers of their new genre of news as comedy are more informed about world affairs, are generally also more cynical about candidates, campaigns, the electoral system and the news media than network news viewers. Like Clarksville Online, they are an excellent alternative to traditional media.

Using the entire half-hour programs as the basis of analysis yielded the same results: there was just as much substance to The Daily Show’s coverage as there was on the network news. And The Daily Show was much funnier, with less of the hype—references to photo ops, political endorsements, and polls—that typically overshadows substantive coverage on network news, according to the study…

Professor Fox’s study, titled “No Joke: A Comparison of Substance in The Daily Show with Jon Stewart and Broadcast Network Television Coverage of the 2004 Presidential Election Campaign,” will be published next summer in the Journal of Broadcast and Electronic Media. - Ars Technica interview with Professor Fox

I wasn't kidding.

They finally posted part 2....

Stewart et al. are great when it comes to addressing issues and bringing them to light with all of their absurdity but they hardly scratch the surface. I wouldnt mind if they cut the show down to one hour a week like Mahr but they actually did some research and debated the issues rather than just making parodies of them, cable news channels already got that in the bag.

He didn't really let McCain say his piece.

McCain's piece is the current party line, which really sucks because he's a clever man. His advisors are running him as the next G.W.Bush, which seems like a terrible strategy to me.

here's how the rest of this conversation might have gone, statueofmike...

McCain 'don't set a deadline, the enemy will strike once we've pulled out'

Stewart 'but we're mediating a civil war, not fighting an enemy of America'

McCain 'some of the people we're fighting are militias that are using terrorist tactics to get their way, and could possibly be affiliating with terrorist organizations'

Stewart 'but they are generally clear in stating their mission is to protect their people from bad things in neighborhoods where there are no police, as well as aggressively advance the desire that the US leave Iraq in every way they can'

McCain 'well, I know all of this, I'm just trying to argue for the wrong side because my advisors have convinced me to pander to the right so I can get through the Republican primaries. We can not 'win' this war, because there is no longer a clear enemy to fight and a clear group on our side... the Right wishes this weren't the case, and feels compelled to drag this nation-building disaster to an even more disastrous end than is already guaranteed.'
