I was pretty surprised by McCain in this interview. I have always respected him, but this years campaign has really damaged my opinion of him. Here is something that surprised me. A very very candid interview and totally worth sift. Enjoy.

I used to like John McCain because he had a sense of humor. (An actual one apparently.)I just don't trust anything he says at all anymore.

Yeah, I find it hard to trust the guy too.

Also, the federal and state government already taxes gasoline heavily.

Also, we already have lithium-ion batteries that can take you that far on a single charge.

I have no idea if he's right or wrong here, but he can obviously out-think our current leader. (I believe you could trap George Bush by slipping a paper grocery bag over his head.)

Unfortunately nuclear power plants can take around 20 years to construct and license in the US. So that can hardly be helpful with climate change in the short term as he states.

McCain is right about everything he says in this video, with one exception:

People who make less than 30,000 a year should not have to pay any income tax or social security tax. Replace that revenue by increasing taxes on all fossil fuels and anything that causes pollution. Eliminate tax incentives for getting married / having children. Build electric subways in all cities with population > 500,000. Plan cities where ordinary people have no need for automobiles, like Tokyo.

I'm happy to see a politician upset with the current status-quo, but as already mentioned above, nuclear takes too long. Not only that, but it's just as bad as coal fire. While yes, it doesn't produce the carbon dioxide but it requires tremendous amounts of water, poses a HUGE risk in the event something goes wrong . . . again . . . and the extraction process counteracts all the benefits we gain. Now, if we were able to create fusion and fission power from other sources, then by all means go right ahead. We'll need nuclear type power sources for space, but here on the planet we have plenty of weather systems to bypass most of the power requirements from nuclear and most of them can be built and in place in a matter of months.

On a more side note, while he mentions gas tax being regressive, this should be the stepping stone for bringing in the design principles of new urbanism and it's kin, as jwray mentioned, in places like Tokyo, Amsterdam, Berlin and numerous other cities I could easily cite. In order for us to end our oil dependence, we must first eliminate our need for it. Simply switching our fuel source doesn't always solve the problem because cars and it's kin use a lot of non-renewable resources in their making and quick disposal. But anyways, time to end this rant.

I am not sure how valid the position that nuclear power is more dangerous that conventional energy sources is at this point in time.

There are ways to deal with the waste. Nuclear mishaps are extremely uncommon. I would not be surprised if it were far more safe than mining for coal or drilling for oil. The point that it takes a long time to build plants is valid. Though 20 years seems a little high if we were dedicated to getting the job done. Twiddles, I imagine you were thinking about the one in TN, the construction on that one was one and off...

Reason I cant trust him is the moment I realized I didnt like him. When he campaigned against Bush in 2000 he blasted him on many issues, second he lost, he supported him on some of the same issues and said it was "politics" or "party loyalty" and now that Bush is on his way out he has begun to turn again and blast Bush. Just reminds me of something Clinton would do

Nuclear power supplies almost all of France's electricity. The life expectancy in France is higher than in the US and the rate of cancer in France is lower than in the US. The amount of money spent on healthcare per capita in France is much lower than the US, and the people of France are on average much healthier than the people of the US, which strongly suggests that their socialized medicine is more efficient than the US healthcare market, and that their nuclear facilities are relatively safe.
