I hope this is how music is sold in the future guy performing selling music to people around him.

My wife was watching some of mtv's online video offerings, and when I compare what is showing up as popular on that site to things like this guy and Imogen Heap it makes me wonder what the hell is wrong with the world (or at least the US, but I assume the problem is more widespread). How can absolute talent voids like Britney Spears and her ilk warrant anything but derision when compared to actual musical ability and creativity?

Because talent isn't something that can be sold and marketed as well as sex appeal. Hope this guy goes far, he can beat box circles around most of what I've seen out there.

"How can absolute talent voids like Britney Spears and her ilk warrant anything but derision when compared to actual musical ability and creativity?"

Now, don't get me wrong here, but... Britney Spears and singers like her actually do have *real* talent. *NOT ALL OF THEM DO.* But some do, such as the ones that came from the Mickey Mouse Club like her and Christina Aguilera.

They have real singing talent.

However.

You are correct in that they are riding a corporate wave of success and that they do NOT write their own music.

They are corporate creations.

If you are not coming up with the MELODY in your music, you are not writing your own music.

That's the bottom line.

question: how many musicians hope that the future of music is begging in the street and giving away video for free?

I spent two years going to a drum n bass weekly in NYC (Konkrete Jungle) listening to some of the best MCs in the world. If this guy doesn't have a career in music, I'll have lost some of my faith in people's perception of art.

Absolutely fantastic, this is talent, this is real art. This is culture.

There are a handful of places in the US where you can experience this kind of natural creativity without the taint of corporate greed. Very few.

The way the music is produced and constructed may be innovative, but the actual music he makes is pretty unoriginal. Maybe it's just not my style.

Can anyone confirm or deny if those lyrics are original? It's always nice to see someone that can bbox and sing, let alone write.

Wow, that is impressive. It really sounds like that track was laid down in a studio, not just some vocal samples on the spot. Plus some skilled working of the pedals. It's a great idea, don't bother with any hardware, simply make the sounds you hear in your head.

Reminds me of <a rel="nofollow" href="http://www.kidbeyond.com/>Kid Beyond who appears in this clip as well: http://www.videosift.com/video/Portishead-Wandering-Stars-amazing-live-beatbox-looping

He has one clip where he explains the process.
Could have sworn that clip was already on here somewhere but I can´t find it.
Here is the YT link: http://de.youtube.com/watch?v=HfBh3lZZi8Q

Ok, the guy is good, but why does some random dude on a corner hit #1, and Reggie Watts and Keller Williams can barely get out of the queue? I'll never understand the whims of VideoSift.

OK, let's see, there are quite a few Reggie Watts vids on here, including http://www.videosift.com/video/Reggie-Watts-Out-Of-Control-Stunning-No-Editing-Involved which has almost 100 votes, so it's not like he isn't appreciated here.

And I see Keller has one sift by... oh, you... and while he is entertaining enough and talented... it's not as stand outish as a guy using nothing but his voice and an effects box.

But then also, hmm, this is better, musically, to my ears, I just enjoy this tune over and above the skill of the looping etc... and it's out in the street, so you get that real feel of immediacy... and we haven't heard of him, so you have this unknown blowing us away. Just seeing someone of this talent busking is always amazing, and makes you want to upvote for

That's why it is the way it is, and I think the sift has voted well here... I have watched this song at least 4 or 5 times now, and I won't be watching either the Reggie or Keller ones again as they just don't catch me.

An even larger issue: with the internet and music creation technology and direct-to-listener performances the world is now awash with SO MANY really outstanding musical artists that they've become a dime a dozen.

heh heh, spoco - I was just rambling. There is the one Reggie vid with a lot of votes, but three others that died in the queue, and three hanging out in pqueues. Yes, the Keller Williams vid is mine, but I specifically didn't link it because I didn't want to seem like I was pimping my own vids. I wasn't saying this didn't deserve all the votes, just that I often can't figure out what makes the sift happy. Maybe I'll just have to go promote some of those Reggie Watts vids to see if I can find out.
