Hamas hides munitions in mosques and schools, uses ambulances to transport armed men, fires rockets into Israel (10,000 since 2001) and then has their brave "warriors" hide among their own women and children.

Whether you support or condemn Israel is secondary to intellectual honesty. There are two sides to this story and Israel ain't the side strapping bombs to their kids.

WTF is your point QM? Gazans have not had military bases or bomb shelters or anything for a long time. Israel bombs or bulldozes almost all the important structures in Gaza. I don't think there is any honor or bravery or noble fighting for this David v. Goliath. It's insurgent peasant fighting for survival.

You can't even question what drives a people to blow themselves up or hide munitions in the schools? The literally have nothing to lose. THey have been choked and strangled out of any jobs, economic, food, water, electricty, self-governance, any freedom to travel, medicine, salaried doctors.

You know if it was your country fighting the british they would be freedom fighters. And you might want to review some Revolutionary war tactics before you say how disgusting these heathen Palestinians are.

And you really think Israel wants the rockets to stop????? Which side do you think draws the first blood after a week or more of calm in the region?

From Daoud Kuttab's article "Ten Myths About Gaza":

Myth # 9 Israel wants to weaken Hamas

Another Israeli myth is that the campaign aims at weakening Hamas. Amos Gilad, a senior Israeli Defense Ministry official, told Israel Radio the goal is to weaken the movement.

While the Israelis will certainly weaken the movement military at the present time, it has already raised their public stature in Palestine and the Arab world. Hamas whose public standing was deteriorating because of its difficulty to govern has now become popular as they are seen as heroes who are standing up to the Israeli military machine. As a movement Hamas can't be destroyed even if many of its leaders are killed. Furthermore, Hamas's hard-line political position has caused a major set back to moderate Arab leaders especially those in Arab countries who have a peace treaty with Israel.

The look in the mans eyes at the end of the video says it all - there is one man who will seek revenge. He will be launching rockets or strapping a bomb to himself and detonating in a crowded place, or otherwise avenging his dead wife.

Purification? In other parts of the world, that's called a Genocide or a Holocaust.

QM, of those "10,000" rockets how much damage or causulties have resulted from these randomly fired rockets?

How many rockets would have to be launched at your house before you become 'concerned'?

And you really think Israel wants the rockets to stop????? Which side do you think draws the first blood after a week or more of calm in the region?

I don't think Israel wants any more bloodshed and woudl prefer peaceful neighbors. Unfortunately, the rest of the world wants Israel destroyed, including the UN thugocracy.

Isn't it odd that random sifters who decry waterboarding as barbaric think Hamas breaking rule after rule of the Geneva Conventions is A-OK?

Now all that aside, do you realize the whole "paradigm" of this conflict is false?

"Palestinians" are not a people, culture or nation.
Their goal is to destroy Israel, not build or create for themselves.

"Way back on March 31, 1977, the Dutch newspaper Trouw published an interview with Palestine Liberation Organization executive committee member Zahir Muhsein. Here's what he said:

The Palestinian people does not exist. The creation of a Palestinian state is only a means for continuing our struggle against the state of Israel for our Arab unity. In reality today there is no difference between Jordanians, Palestinians, Syrians and Lebanese. Only for political and tactical reasons do we speak today about the existence of a Palestinian people, since Arab national interests demand that we posit the existence of a distinct "Palestinian people" to oppose Zionism.

For tactical reasons, Jordan, which is a sovereign state with defined borders, cannot raise claims to Haifa and Jaffa, while as a Palestinian, I can undoubtedly demand Haifa, Jaffa, Beer-Sheva and Jerusalem. However, the moment we reclaim our right to all of Palestine, we will not wait even a minute to unite Palestine and Jordan."

quantumushroom, your point seems like it's almost akin to 'they hate us because we're free' - I understand it's a complex situation but the reality of it can be summed up by answering this simple question: 'why are people firing rockets at Israel?'

The administration of Israel has pushed living conditions in the Palestinian 'areas' below anything you or me would class as acceptable for ourselves.

For years, long before this attack, citizens of Palestine could not get health care, they cannot go to school, they cannot drive anywhere due to roadblocks. New settlements are built on Palestinian land, the people have no choice but to leave their homes and become refugees.

There is a giant wall around their area of the country, 'protecting' Israel from them.

It's fucking apartheid and now their making the killing stroke. How much more land do you think Israel will 'settle' on after everyone in Palestine escapes to Egypt or is killed?

Sadly, even with all the protests, they've basically been given carte blanch by the American media to do whatever they want.

***POST-POST DISCLAIMER:

I do not know who is responsible for the bloodshed between Israel and Palestine. I know that many have wanted to wipe Israel off the face of the planet. I love the fact that Israel was victorious in the 3 Day War. I have just heard a few negative things about Israel in regards to the Israeli-Palestinian conflict and was under the impression that Israel started it.***

I understand they are on the lookout for weapons caches. However, what they are doing in the meantime is fucking over random people.

Who the fuck do they think they are breaking down the walls of people's homes?!!

I understand, btw, that those troops are at risk being out in the open. However, tunneling through civilians' walls leaves them with little to protect them from the cold at night (!) or thieves.

This next bit may seem at odds with the above, but I thought I'd include it since it's so interesting. I am aware that this is not the opposite side's perspective: this is simply a view into a pro-war Palestinian mentality.

There was a comedy show, ironically, that I was watching once that had a man on who was pretty young and is the son of Palestinian immigrants. He was talking about Israel and Palestine and how his parents are from there. He said something very interesting:

He said, "It's selfish, but I hope for peace between Israel and Palestine too.".

How is that selfish?

If Israel is the aggressor in these conflicts, it is actually kind of fucked up to ask Palestine to lay down its arms.

What is the death toll of the 10,000 rockets? Not many, because they are mostly home made pieces of crap.

Both are ignorant, small-minded views, and end in the bloodshed of countless innocent civilians.

Concerned as in address the root problem behind the mortars and rockets? Would I go kill thousands (at least half of which being innocent civilians and women and children)?? Don't you think that might backfire if my goal was to stop rockets landing on my illegal settlements on stolen lands.

I'm willing to bet if you gave them back their airport, jobs, access to the sea, fishing, water, working sewers, hospitals, electricity.. Just maybe.. maybe people would not be launching rockets. Possible? at all?

Another first time poster

Bad things happen in Gaza its true but....

I am really sick of all this Israel Palestine bla bla I dont wanna hear about it anymore they are killing each other for ages now and they get all the attention for it.

Everybody wants to help, everybody wants to get back to the status quo wich sucked for all parties involved.
It would be interesting to see if the factions involved would be better of left alone, let them fight it out dont interfeer..

But the international community has to act like they always do, no we cant just watch... why not?

No one cares about Darfur anymore where the arabs are happily going about their genocide rape business. And in a year youll hear that while we watched the the Gaza show we forgot about a much greater human disaster in the DRCongo.

I understand it's a complex situation but the reality of it can be summed up by answering this simple question: 'why are people firing rockets at Israel?'

The answer is simple: most of the world outside of the US wants to see Israel wiped off the map. Jews are declared to be enemies of Islam BY ISLAM. There is no logic behind the actions of men strapping homicide bombs to their own wives and children.

Israel gains nothing by oppressing "Palestinians" (AKA Arabs with a fictional identity) and would much rather live in peace. The Wall and other measures are responses to ceaseless attacks.

QM views all Palestinian people by the worst elements of their culture.

Bullshit. Just like "moderate Muslims", Palestinians have let scumbag terrorists represent them to the world. No doubt were some kind of peace accord reached and approved by 99% of Palestinians, the other 1% would try everything in their power to ruin it, and that 1% would be aided in their cause by Iran, Syria, Jordan, etc.

Israel has every right to defend itself while the world waits in vain for the "Palestinian people" to get their act together. And for those who think appeasement is the answer: if you could theoretically give the exact same resources to Palestine that Israel has, including the same area of land, Palestine would not build itself up, it would use all those resources to tear Israel down.

Palestine and Friends don't want peace, and so they have war.

I'm pretty much with QM on this one.

"Palestine would not build itself up, it would use all those resources to tear Israel down."

Apart from the nuclear fallout, I think the rest of the world should sit back and just let them duke it out.
This fighting will go on for all time, as long as both sides still exist.

It's not about making peace as there will never be peace. The best possible outcome anyone could expect from this is a temporary ceasefire and we all know how long that will last.

God you're an idiot...

While the possibility of a Jewish homeland in Palestine had been a goal of Zionist organisations since the late 19th century, it was not until 1917 and the Balfour declaration that the idea gained the official backing of a major power. The declaration stated that the British government supported the creation of a national home for the Jewish people in Palestine. In 1936 the Peel Commission suggested partitioning Mandate Palestine into a Jewish state and an Arab state, though it was rejected as unworkable by the government and was at least partially to blame for the 1936-39 Arab revolt.

The UN partition plan

In the face of increasing violence, the British handed the issue over to the United Nations. The result was Resolution 181, a partition plan to divide Palestine between Jews and Arabs. The Jewish state was to receive around 56% of the land area of Mandate Palestine, encompassing 82% of the Jewish population, though it would be separated from Jerusalem, designated as an area to be administered by the UN. The plan was accepted by most of the Jewish population, but rejected by much of the Arab populace. On 29 November 1947, the plan was put to a vote in the United Nations General Assembly. The result was 33 to 13 in favour of the plan, with 10 abstentions. The Arab countries (all of which had opposed the plan) proposed to query the International Court of Justice on the competence of the General Assembly to partition a country against the wishes of the majority of its inhabitants, but were again defeated. The division was to take effect on the date of British withdrawal from the territory (15 May 1948), though the UK refused to implement the plan, arguing it was unacceptable to both sides.

http://upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/commons/thumb/9/97/UN_Partition_Plan_For_Palestine_1947.png/180px-UN_Partition_Plan_For_Palestine_1947.png

Can you at least go read some history before you try to pass yourself off as conversant in it?

Jewish and Arab relations through history since the conquest of Roman controlled Israel in about the 7th century have varied from cordial to strained to persecution (the Jew's lived on Arab owned lands and were subject to their laws).

The start of the modern conflict was the Arab backlash over the forced creation of Israel by the UN, effectively disenfranchising the Palestinians of the land they had owned for many centuries.

Basically your "who started it first" rant is based on a very thin slice of recorded history.

I'm not pro/anti Jew on this matter, but I think using the UN to mandate the carving of a state out of a sovereign country is a pretty big first punch in the current fight. And let's face it, if the UN came along and told the US that it had to permit the establishment of a new country for the Native Americans that would be ruled by them, ceding 56% of the land mass of the USA, I doubt you would be in here supporting them...

Oh QM doesn't do history, he does ill informed right wing banter.

Israel is a recognized and supported state by most of the world. Not just America. These little places called the EU, Russia and most of Asia. But you know geography isn't a strength of his.

The UN has actually worked time and time again to condemn military actions of Israel in instigating violent reactions from Palestine and bring Israel back to resolution 242 and an acceptance of the 1967 borders. But you know Israel has this buddy in the UN that shoots down Security Council resolutions in the name of US. Which then wonders why China and Russia game security council resolutions in their favor as well.

Islam is not against Jews, Judea and most of Europe were under Islamic rule before during the times of the Moors. If they really wanted to wipe out a religion like Judaism before they could have.

Arab nations are against Zionism not Judaism, but Zionism is a representative policy right now of Israel. There is a healthy Jewish community living in Iran quite well also.

Most Arab Jews moved to Israel due to the fact that Israel citizenship is given to anyone who can claim Jewish lineage.

But I guess you are trying to stir that old clash of civilization story with mharevy42 and Pprt.

What you're saying, Throbbin, is that all you see is the Western stereotype of an Arab man.

If you look at the last frame, and really look into his eyes, you might see the eyes of a man so utterly defeated and tired of his life, that he just doesn't care anymore, not about Israel, not about Palestine, not about himself, a man who has given up inside. His neighbours probably had to care for him and his family for a while after that before he could even bring himself to give a shit again. I don't see any suggestion of violence in his face. He's probably just a normal dude.

Although the entire situation is terrible and I can't see in any why how the military's actions in this situation were justifiable, here's something that bugs me about how some people here are reacting to this video.

Six years ago, a common soldier was recorded giving a guess as to why he was doing what he was doing. He preceded this guess with the statement "I don't know", and he was obviously not in any chain of command with awareness or knowledge of the reasons behind the orders. He used, or was translated as using, an intensely loaded emotional term "purification".

I can fully understand the Israeli government wanting to censor that film, even if it was morally wrong for them to do so. That soldier's comment had put them in the position where they'd just been asked the equivalent of "Yes or no: Are you still beating your wife?".

A single word in a single sentence in a different language from an uninformed and media-uneducated source that he admits is a guess in a casual interview should not be interpreted as the position of his entire government, especially not six years later.

I worry when i see the first few posts saying "I hope people wake up to the reality" when the video is from 2002. Even if it was from the present day, what is there for american viewers to wake up to? It's none of your business. There is bad on both sides, don't get involved until it becomes absolutely undeniable that there are warcrimes going on and a peace-keeping force needs to be dispatched, and even then make sure. Because remember how it went the last time you dragged the west into a conflict based on shoddy reasons.

If you want to stop Hamas from using schools and mosques for military operations, you have to avoid acting in such a way that that behavior would give them a tactical advantage, but you also have to minimize civilian casualties. Never use a cruise missile when a sniper will suffice.
