Nobody likes the idea of being drafted... however if the fight in Baghdad will continue for years to come then it would be inevitable.

the draft is a great idea, people shouldn't discount it simply because they don't want to serve their country

As a veteran, I agree each of us should serve their country to at least a small capacity, but a war draft forces some people to the battlefield that may not be able to handle it and the mere fact that they are being "forced" to serve in a war that they may not support or go to prison is an ultimatum that few would wish to face.

"It’s easy to talk about supporting a war if someone else is fighting that war. And we already have an economic draft. We’re holding hostage reservists, National Guard. We’re enticing kids that come from the highest unemployment areas with $15 — $20 — $30,000 dollars.

But for the middle class and the kids of the Congress, and the Pentagon, and the White House, they’re not involved. So you find a situation where people support the war, but not my kids."

- Rep. Charlie Rangel (D-NY)

A draft remains highly unlikely for the reasons others have listed. However, for those who think the War begins and ends with Iraq and Afghanistan, you are fooling yourselves.

Islamofascists, moon-worshipping, death-cult fanatics they are, will nonetheless remain a relentless enemy, perhaps for decades. They are spread across a wide swath of countries.

Victicrats like Rangel do what they do best, trying to make everything about race and class. Funny then that the Clintons, who so badly need the support of teachers' unions, didn't send Chelsea to a government school. Guess that whole "hypocrisy" thing is universal.

As 9-11 proved, if you're an American, you're already in the war, right here at home. Your morale, knowledge of history and basic survival preparedness are all vital to the survival of the Republic.

"However, for those who think the War begins and ends with Iraq and Afghanistan, you are fooling yourselves."

And you can prove it by recounting how many times you've been attacked in your neighborhood the past year compared to the "terrorists" in bad evil "islamo-fascist" Baghdad.

You're a chump.

Once we figure out your stupidity gene, the world will bloom.

Fatigue cripples US army in Iraq

With the U.S army in this state I wouldn't be surprised.

What? Are you accusing the Clintons of hypocrisy? How dare you defame the names of such honest and upright souls!

Ah, the liberal mindset in all its glory. Well done, young one, you are truly a shining beacon for the others here on VS and the world at large.

Until world war 3 I highly doubt that a draft will be in the works for such a small war as Iraq. Counter-terrorism is the new conflict of the century, similar to the cold war. Heck a draft was more likely in the mid 80's then it is now. Just another democrat full of BS who likes to invoke fear as his ally and not common sense or reason.

This is a very common and completely ignorant argument. It assumes that every person who supports the war in question is heartless and selfish, having no care whatsoever the cost of said war. This assumption is just foolish. It also assumes that the alternative to fighting is better. The whole basis for supporting a war is the belief that NOT fighting would be worse than fighting and that the price for NOT fighting would be higher than fighting. That statement alone makes this Senator's argument moot.

It also argues that no one is allowed to support a war unless he enlists in the army, but everyone is perfectly allowed to oppose that war free-of-guilt even if opposing that war is wrong or irresponsible. Anyone with any sense knows this is a transparent double-standard, in other words, a lame argument. Try again Mr. Rangel.

rotflmao.

you call it war because there's never been a war inside your country. Well, apart from civil war. But that's absolutely not the same as having strangers bombing your buildings, or taking your fellow citizens to prison camp.

this kind of statement simply makes me laugh.

As 9-11 proved, if you're an American, you're already in the war, right here at home.

I normally stay out of the pure politics threads, don't even read them just for this reason, but I saw this quote in recent comments and can't help it here.

We lost once the recounts were done just about 3k people on 9-11. Each and every year, every one, we lose MORE to accidental drowning.

http://www.allcountries.org/uscensus/135_deaths_and_death_rates_from_accidents.html

I'm sorry and I don't mean to minimize what happened, it was as severe a crime as could have happened but they can't destroy us like that. They can propel us toward suicide though and that's exactly what they've done. The real threat is from those who want to turn us into an authoritarian regime over it and they can destroy us from within.

If each and every year without exception another 9-11 happened accidental drowning would STILL be a bigger real world risk than death by domestic terrorism would have been, but it doesn't happen that often. Only happened once. Yeah, I expect it or something similar or bigger probably will again sometime, how else can they keep us on the path toward sure suicide? But I've also no doubt they'll be but a pin prick when history is done telling the tale, the damage will be mostly self inflicted.

9-11 changed nothing. Our reaction to it, panic and our willingness to sell our futures for momentary illusions of safety did. We're no safer now, we're less so. Just more scared.

ah the draft.

We might as well bring up civil war while we are at it. <- An extreme Possibility. Much like the draft.
I signed up for the Selective Service, But ill be damned if I fight in a war that I do not agree with. It better be another Nazi Germany that is killing /b or Im not going.
