Iranian Girl Dying in Street - June 20 2009

"It is not possible to verify the authenticity of these images, but they have been uploaded repeatedly on YouTube, Facebook and other sites.

A copy of the video was also emailed to The Times. It seems to show a woman lying in the street with blood spurting from her chest. A man leans over, trying to stop the bleeding with his hands.

The footage, which can be viewed on YouTube, is extremely graphic. The identity of the woman could not be independently confirmed. But she is referred to on Twitter as Neda."

I wanted to say something clever about this is what a real police state looks like but.. what the fuck can you really say to this. It's current, and important, I think. Sorry to anyone who is offended? Not really.

I guess you could fake this, and there would be reason too.. but we'll see. So far the response has been that this is real, and the girl was shot by a sniper.

This really smells of the video of the "tank man" which became THE image of the China for almost 2 decades. One commenter on the LA times website suggested that something like this could bring down an entire regime. I tend to agree. Apparently, her death is becoming the rallying point for the whole revolution. I wish the Iranians all the luck in the world.

"Shiite Muslims mourn their dead on the third, seventh and 40th days after a death, and these commemorations are a pivotal part of Iran's rich history. During the revolution, the pattern of confrontations between the shah's security forces and the revolutionaries often played out in 40-day cycles.

The first clashes in January 1978 produced two deaths that were then commemorated on the 40th day in mass gatherings, which in turn produced new confrontations with security forces — and new deaths. Those deaths then generated another 40-day period of mourning, new clashes, and further deaths. The cycle continued throughout most of the year until the shah's ouster in January 1979. "

Whoa...I hate to pull the *snuff card but somebody's gonna do it if it's not me...

This was pretty graphic and unexpected considering sift guidelines. I'm not necessarily a pansy when it comes to things of graphic nature, but considering I'm on the "disney" of internet video aggregators I was caught way off guard by this...

*discuss (sorry vairetube)

Its graphic, and would technically be snuff per the guidelines - but, it is also a major CNN news story, and this girl is likely to become the face of the Iranian revolution - which in my mind, makes it critically important to be seen. The title and description are clear enough to warn those who don't want to see it.

Sarzysays...

True enough, imstellar, but I think it's been fairly well established at this point that this isn't the place for videos like this, even in they are newsworthy (and no one is going to argue that this isn't).

I'm pretty sure this is not a good thing to put on videosift, seeing as we've removed much, much less obvious death videos.

If someone makes a talk post or blog post that contains these, that's fine by me, but this is snuff and as such should not sift.

vairetubesays...

I think its fine either way, since it's not me in the video.

A short scene of a violent death shows the fragile nature of life in a true light - no before, no after, just a moment in time where things changed forever. Right in front of you. From something, to nothing... but it damn sure means something to someone somewhere.

No, im not saying if you dont want to see it, you're incapable of something that someone who has seen it could do. So I guess thats an argument for taking it off.

Since the story is all over the internet, and whoever wants to see it, can and has...

...maybe re-work stellars "cowards" post to include the links to the news stories and such... at least that will give him a chance to do something productive as well.

If this was me dying, I would want everyone to fucking see it, whether they wanted to or not, because I didn't have a choice seeing my own blood and life slip away. But that is my opinion and is strictly an emotional response.

At least... one isn't misled by the title.... and even though i didnt click on it before posting this, the youtube link in stellars post is this video... so I guess that should have been a clue people wanted to deal with it minus a sifted video.

*discard because i believe that is the right thing to do in this case; someone has mentioned their displeasure, and so we don't need to debate it... it was worth it to have it up for discussion, and so i should have thought of that... someone else did so the system works.

Abel_Priscsays...

I saw this video for the first time a few days ago...and I'm still very fucked up by it. I just can't express how much of an impact it's had. Just... watching the girl get shot, look up, take her last breath and then die all right before my eyes. I'm in no mood to argue after that.

vairetubesays...

images dont bother me so much but when i read what the audio translated too.... i dont want this video....sorry? i thought i made it clear, if it was decided it was to be sifted, i didnt want it anymore. stellar can have it since he posted it first in a somewhat more appropriate manner, and has been following up with links and posts.

i thought people were going to sort this all out~~ everyone has seen it, you can watch it by the link in stellars coward post, etc... sorry i really think duckmans video was a lot better.

... out of respect for neda.. someone else can resift it and feel free to link to here. but please support http://www.videosift.com/video/CNN-Video-Of-Neda-Before-She-Was-Killed-In-Iranian-Protest instead. *kill
