Interview with David Lynch and Frank Herbert

What do you know, Frank Herbert apparently loved Lynch's film version of his masterpiece novel.

I always loved Lynch's version. It was so fucking mysterious. Lynch himself was unhappy with the final product--I'm pretty sure there's an interview on the Sift somewhere--but I still loved the imagery. The Dune series that came out on the Sci-Fi channel was pure pedestrian boredom.

I've never understood why Lynch's Dune is so derided, I always thought it was really enjoyable- all three versions that I've seen. I do wish Lynch would revisit it so we fans can finally have the definitive version that we, and Lynch, deserve.

Loved the book, and have seen two versions of the film. The one that I call the sting version was not enjoyable to me. It follows the book well, the acting was solid, and it captured all the metaphors. It should be one of the best film adaptations ever, But I just couldn't deal with all the whispering dialouge. It's a loathsome and highly annoying tactic of building tension i.m.o. It just took me right out of the movie. Even though Im embarrassed to admit it, I like the 3 part mini series version best, by John Harrisn.

I've mentioned this before anytime a Dune vid gets sifted (and here I go again)...anyone familiar with Spicediver's fanedit? Check out fanedit.org to find it. If you like Lynch's Dune, then you'll really like Spicediver's version.

From the readme:

Neither of the officially released versions of David Lynch's visually amazing 'Dune' are satisfactory. The Theatrical Version was gutted to the point of incomprehension by executive producer Dino De Laurentiis in his quest to make it a two hour edit. The easier-to-follow Extended Version with restored footage was so incompetently put together by MCA TV that Lynch removed his name from the writing and directing credits.

Broadly, my intention with the Alternative Edition is to improve storytelling and flow by preserving the best elements from both official versions of the film while also integrating some newly available deleted scenes.

^ But aside from all that, the thing I love about Dune more than any other is the incredible score! Make fun of the band Toto all you like (I'll even join you), but the Main Theme from Dune can take the Pepsi challenge with anything by John Williams or Jerry Goldsmith.
