My guess is the ump felt it hit his chest, was sure that something flying at 80+ mph would bounce off him, and couldn't feel the additional weight of the ball due to the amount of extra weight in padding on his chest. Also, the addition of weight was very sudden and obscured by the feeling of impact and his moving very quickly after it.
