That's either a Moose with a death wish or it's been around people before and thinks it'll get fed.

I sure hope he didn't kill that moose...so beautiful...
unless he was starving, then one could look at it as the moose was giving herself up...

It is my understanding that in certain regions you have to have a Doe Permit for killing females.

If it's anything like deer here, it's illegal to take a mother with a calf.

shoot the cow, and then shoot the calf for the more tender meat for Christmas dinner, that way everyone wins

So I was out hunting with my buddy and this moose, rather bored, it walks right up to me. So I says "Hey Miss Moose, why the long face?"

I'm surprised it ended that way. It takes a special breed of psychopath to be a bow hunter.

That might not have been an arrow, the bow didn't look loaded to me though the vid isn't clear enough to be sure. That could be the center stabilizer though I can see how it could look like an arrow. Basic design of the compound bow can be seen here, though the illustration has a very large one. Some are more understated.

Very cool clip though. I'm glad he didn't shoot it.

Nah, check at around 2:05 - 2:10. You can see the arrowhead. Besides, it's above his grip rather than below.

Yes, that was not an arrow, and a lot of places prohibit the hunting of female animals without a special and limited permit.

I was within ten metres of a bull moose (32 feet or so) at a Canadian lakeside camp last year. The moose, who had come by to soak its body in the cool lake waters, didn't know what the hell to make of me. Poor thing had been bit to hell and back by flies at its hindquarter regions and was visibly bloody. Had a few beer in me and waded out gently to say hello. My wife reminded me before I got too close: "er... honey, that animal weights almost a ton"... and that sobered me up pretty quickly.

If it were mating season, I likely wouldn't be around to type this.

This was almost like the coffee scene in Heat.

"Now that we've been face to face, if I'm there and I gotta put you away, I won't like it."

I was expecting carnage of some sort, but I was pleasantly surprised.

So all the humans dating back several hundred to several thousands of years were all psychopaths?

I agree. There's about 10,000x the places you can hunt with a bow that you can't even fire a gun in. Up here at least, you can be within a few minutes walk of suburbia with a bow, you have to go miles with a gun.

I think it would be really hard for me to shoot anything after being that close, law or not.

^Believe it or not, most hunters tend to be pretty decent people with a healthy respect for nature. There is a law, yes, but she also had a calf with her, and moose calves have a very high mortality rate: http://www.gi.alaska.edu/ScienceForum/ASF13/1395.html

And when I say I expected carnage, I thought the hunters were gonna get it.

By any--hell every--modern standard, yes they were most definitely psychopaths.

Nah, I'll let ancient cultures with no modern weaponry/grocery stores slide on that one. But the current generations of bow hunters, yeah, I'll be proud to call them whackos.

kulpims video is a excellent example of what I'm talking about, barely 5 meters away and the animal doesn't go down, instead it ends up running off with an arrow in it's chest, even if the two bozos managed to track it and kill it, the poor animal had to suffer for who knows how long. Anyone wanting to inflict an unnecessary amount of suffering for the sake of a more exciting kill is a sick person, if they want to be that close to their kill they should take a pocket knife and go bear hunting.

I've had moose/elk come up so close I could touch them before. It's pretty unusual that a cow with calf does anything like this though, as they tend to be more careful/nervous.

And hunting moose with a bow (if that is what they're doing) seems totally irresponsible.
