The air traffic controllers sound more fazed by the whole thing than the pilot. He's cool as ice!

Been watching lots of Air Crash Investigation recently. Pretty amazing landing, and it's cool to hear the audio traffic.

This is gripping stuff, and really amazing that the police were alerted, watching and waiting for the aircraft before it even ditched.

I'd say that they've fixed the inter-agency communication issues that happened on 9/11.

Impressive to the point communication, no bs or even extra wording, just matter of fact brief packets of high priority information.

*promote .. I am unbelievably afraid of flying, and now this pilot is my ultimate hero! I've had so many nightmares of being in a plane and having the engines just die.. Of course in my nightmares the plane then goes down like a rock (a la The Simpsons Y2K episode)

It never ceases to amaze me the grace under pressure that men and women face everyday in situations like these. If there can be one positive attribute about our species, this would certainly be candidate.

The pilot had a choice and he chose correctly. He could have waited a minute or two, held out hope that they could re-start the engines and make it to the airports the controllers were suggesting or he could nose down right then to maintain enough speed to flare and land safely.
That's the difference between a hero and a competent pilot.
I think it is important that he was an experienced glider pilot. He knew that that those jets cannot glide and when the thrust stops they drop like rocks. He needed to take immediate steps to get on the ground safely and on his own terms. That was amazing.
