Man I am running out of shit to do when I'm analyzing the physics of apple snapping videos but I bet he couldn't do this if he wasn't holding it against his leg.

you can. i remember my mother doing it as she walked about the house. i seem to remember she had more of a twist to the motion though.

When I tried this the apple didn't snap until I held the tips of my fingers against my leg. I did not have to apply much force. With practice it can probably be done while standing/walking against any convenient body part.

I tried this yesterday and it worked great. I was even able to split it into quarters the same way. Just make sure your hands (as well as the apple) are dry.
