I read about this and have wanted to see a demonstration. Now I'm going to be checking out all of those fake smilers. There's one person in particular I can't wait to see "smile" now . . .

Took a long time to get to the point. It's easy, just ignore the mouth and look at the eyes. It's easier with a photo or video because you can cover the mouth with your hand. About 5% of people can smile with their eyes at will, regardless of their actual feelings. They tend to be successful actors, politicians, and business people.

Another thing to watch for is people showing too many teeth.

I had heard about this previously, and so I consciously try to mimic a real smile with my eyes. It seems to work, but who knows.

With enough practice you can use your jedi mind tricks to fool any one. Even derren brown, all you need to know is when a person is at their weakest hour of the day.

No im not being funny or trying to joke with that above statement.

i'd just like to severely doubt that the brain works in "parts".

kthxbye.

I completely disagree with you on this MINK. I totally buy that the brain works with centers for different tasks that working in unison creates the "mind" or consciousness.

I used to have a really unconvincing fake smile most of my life, I always noticed it in photos. But I found in the last couple of years that the key is to recall the fondness and affection I have for someone I love. And I've gotten so I can smile any moment, thinking of her. I'd be interested to find out if my induced smile would stand up to real analysis.

IIRC the brain working in parts is done to simplify learning of the brains functions for us, it has no bearing on how the mind actually works. This is seen in people who suffer brain damage but retain functionality as tasks get rewired to other parts, also can be experienced under LSD with the phenomenon of synesthesia.
