A park full of feral cats, a Japanese show with an unlimited budget for fish, and a sturdy scale combine to show us just how much fish a single cat can carry. The dramatic music and computer animation carry you though and you don't need to understand Japanese.

Moral: Do not underestimate the strength of a highly motivated cat.

great post. it proves exactly how powerful a thief some dirty cat can be!

by the way, this experiment is based on the theme song to the cartoon show "sazae-san".

"o-sakana kuwaeta dora-neko! sazae de gozaimasu!"

I don't know how they think up these kinds of shows. But it's compelling entertainment. I'll take this over American Idol.

plastiquemonkey, is that cartoon the source for the "Dora cat" reference? I used exactly the same title that was used for the original YouTube post just because I loved the oddity of the translation, but I couldn't Google any reference to "Dora" and "cat" that made any sense in context.

ETA: Wait, I Googled the cartoon you named, found some leads, and finally found this:

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Doraemon

"The Mysterious Thief Dorapan - He is a mysterious thief from France. He has a wand with a jewel on it used to change the material of one object into another (eg. paper --> water, rock --> china, etc.). He fears the dark and dogs. He likes eating dorayaki with cheese. Though often misunderstood for a "villain", he always steals for a reason, espsecially to help the poor. He was originally an enemy of The Doraemons, but that was because an evil scientist ordered him to be one. The Mysterious Thief Dorapan later banded with The Doraemons to defeat the evil scientist."

So we've got the theme from one cartoon used in the show, and a loveable rogue from another cartoon used in the clip's title?

nice work, maudlin, but not quite right:

'neko' means 'cat'. 'doraneko' means 'stray cat', and 'dora' (by itself) can also be used to mean 'stray cat' (just like 'tom' for 'tomcat' in english).

doraemon (this guy: http://www.shopro-entertainment.com/doraemon.html) is a cat-type robot from the 22nd century of the future. he's one of the most famous characters (manga/tv/advertising) in japan. he used to have cat ears, but they got bitten off by a mouse (in the future). the word 'dora' in his name is just like above.

many other characters and various items in "doraemon" are named 'dora-something', including the character you found. the reference is to doraemon himself.

"sazae-san" is a different show, also long-running and very popular. everybody watches it on sundays. the theme song starts with a verse about a 'doraneko' carrying fish and being chased by sazae-san. that's the question being answered by this experiment. everyone knows the sazae-san theme song, which is why this is so funny to japanese. they're taking the song very literally.

the experiment title comes from the song and is written in blue writing in the top right corner of the screen.

the conclusion of the clip you posted (starting with the writing against the sunrise over the earth) says:
'in this way a new piece of trivia is born into the world:'
'the [fish-stealing stray cat] that is chased by sazae-san can steal a maximum load of approximately a 2-kg bonito (fish)'

beautiful.

here's the sazae-san theme song: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=HLhrRvlTzYw&search=sazae
and here's wikipedia on sazae-san: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Sazae-san

Wow -- thanks, plastiquemonkey! I now consider myself thoroughly schooled. *g* (And I may call my next cat Neko or Dora, too.)
