How much is $100 million dollars in budget cuts compared to the federal budget as a whole? This video illustrates the budget using 10 thousand pennies to demonstrate what fraction of that is going to be cut from it.

18 U.S.C. §331:

I always think I understand big numbers, I certainly make the effort to try, but this visualisation really impressed me. Nicely done.

This statute means that you may be violating the law if you change the appearance of the coin and fraudulently represent it to be other than the altered coin that it is. As a matter of policy, the U.S. Mint does not promote coloring, plating or altering U.S. coinage: however, there are no sanctions against such activity absent fraudulent intent. (Source U.S. Mint)

Otherwise those penny-crushers at the various landmarks would be illegal.

I wonder how much money the government would save if they simple paid retail for supplies and building materials, rather than 11,000$ for a hammer, or 50,000$ for a toilet seat.

...or 34,000,000$ on letters sent to people who would be receiving stimulus checks, informing them that they would be receiving checks.

I think we should petition every federal, state, and local government to turn off their air conditioning and heating systems. That alone should save a few billion dollars a year.

Government is huge. Economy can't support it. Foreign countries will stop lending money. Government will debase money supply to reduce debt. The value of the dollar will plunge. Savings will disappear. Cost of living will shoot through the roof. Government will try to regulate and tax their way out of the situation. Civil unrest.

Bravo for illustrating just how idiotic it was for the media and Obama to be bragging about cutting a paltry 100 million. Hey, I'm all for cutting. Nice to see they did SOMETHING.

Know what I'd have preferred? Government NOT approving bailouts, pork, increased debt, 'stimulus' packages, and all the other crap that has increased our national debt more in the past 4 months than in the past 200+ years.

Interesting, and it's true that $100 million is a drop in the bucket, but it's also not even remotely the central proposal from Obama to address the deficit.

To vastly oversimplify, he wants the white line to move left, and the blue line to move right.

To picture what changed between Clinton and Bush, the blue line was to the right of the edge of the table, and Bush moved the blue line left, the white line right, and then added more pennies to the right.

It's a big mess, and every little bit helps.
