You've got every right to be stupid, but don't complain when it comes time to pay the piper.
Maybe it's just me but I suspect that he's in the closet, using christianity as shield.
this dude is clearly gay.
I'm sure this guy would feel the same way if somebody got fired for telling their boss, who talked about church/god a whole FOUR times that day, that Jesus was a myth and they were wasting their life praying to their imaginary friend...You know just expressing their personal opinion, that, as an intelligent person, religion is wrong.
I'm sure that it would never happen. I think there's a bit of a point when your example would absolutely be deemed a discriminatory reason for firing someone.
Don't get me wrong though, this guy is a dumb dumb. Is he just as offended by coffee talk about somone's divorce? Affairs? How about weekend benders? I presume nobody at his place of work uses the Lord's name in vain while he's at work?
My problem with guys like this is the misunderstanding of their own faith and the bizarre notion that homosexuality is somehow special in the laundry list of sinful things that virtually everyone around him will do. Your under orders to Love your neighbor as yourself my friend, and there is no 'unless they sin' escape clause. In fact, Christ himself said he came not for the saved, but for the lost.
I will say that as a Christian I am more offended by this guys ravings than anyone.
i live in san francisco. i have had gay friends, coworkers, and roommates. i can tell when someone is gay.
this dude is clearly gay.
Yep. No doubt. It's sad, seeing somebody hate themselves so much
I'm not saying he is. I'm just pointing out that his website, www.petervadala.com, has excerpts from the college musical he wrote (called "College Musical") which includes the songs "Love's the Truth that Sets Us Free" and "That Guy". Also, on the website, he writes about himself in the third person.
I'm just sayin'.
And... Regarding being hit on by a gay guy. First most are quite cautious and will only approach someone they're pretty certain shares their lifestyle and second all you have to do is say, "that makes me uncomfortable when you do that". You don't need to express your opinions about his lifestyle, and if he does it again HE is in the wrong. Not so tricky dumbass.
For that matter he could have just said that to his supervisor if it bothered him, rather than telling her she's living the "wrong" way.
Telling your boss s/he is an ignorant fool, or immoral can/does get people fired, just like union organizing gets people fired. There are laws against it because it happens, not because it doesn't.
I will say that as a Christian I am more offended by this guys ravings than anyone.
I'd be willing to wager that the lady who complained about his workplace expression of homophobia to HR and got him fired, who is having her right to marry denied because homophobes are willing to vote away other peoples right, is probably more offended than you are.

If you'd like the statement better without the hyperbole: "I will say that as a Christian I am particularly offended by this guys ravings."
I just figured the figurative language better expressed my feeling on the matter. Clearly I wasn't trying to claim right to the absolute most offense over something that happened to strangers thousands of miles away.
There are laws against it because it happens, not because it doesn't.
So do you think it wrong in both examples then? I tend to be of the opinion that mouthing off to your boss over a personal difference of opinion is reasonable grounds for firing be it religion, sexual orientation, or the weather. It's not about being fired because of your religion, orientation, or weather preferences but over being completely disrespectful to your boss or co-workers.
The fair course would have been for Brookstone to allow the subjects of their respective beliefs to punch the other person in the face. I have a feeling Lesbian Fiancee packs more of a wallop than Bigoted Deity, but maybe I'm just a heretic.
While I do agree that being a dick should not be legally defensible as religious expression, it's unfortunately creates all sorts of gray areas. People can be offended by anything, and allowing employers to decide what public opinions their employees may hold is in direct conflict with the rights of citizens in a society which claims to value freedom of expression. I am content to have it either way, but it should be consistently applied, unfortunately nothing ever is.
The thing that strikes me about this guy is that he is a clear copy-cat of carrie prejean. The argument " you can't hold me responsible for what I say if I invoke god" was her MO, and all her worshipers have fed this absurd notion that claiming to be religious should be a free pass. I don't think anybody in that camp will get how ridiculous this guys whining is.
I don't care if you think homosexuality is wrong or not, it's just outrageous to expect someone to censor themselves because their disposition makes you uncomfortable. Deal with it -- it's your problem, not anyone else's.
If people are not allowed to shower the others with their religious nonsense, then she should not flaunt her sex life. It's a sticky situation in any case. Free speech goes both ways - if she can say it, he can criticize it, and vice versa.
From what I got from this, he was uncomfortable with what someone was talking about, and he expressed that, then got fired without warning. Sure, this sort of issue would go to HR, but they should of worked it out at least. They should not of flat out fired him.
Legally, I'm not sure he should've been fired, but I'm fine with it regardless. Nobody should be required to work out anything here except himself. Why should the manager have to censor herself when talking about her fiance? That's ridiculous. It's his problem to work out.
2.gays dont hit on straight ppl. they have great gay-dar being gays themselves. K? I dont get why gross straight men think gays will hit on them...not with THAT haircut buddy.
3. stop saying "so-called"
4. what if my "so-called" religion made me have to hate black people? And my boss was black...and I said...you're wrong cuz my religion says so, stop being all black in my face....I'd be fired. (maybe if i was a Mormon)
From what I got from this, he was uncomfortable with what someone was talking about
It probably made him uncomfortable alright... IN HIS PANTS.
While I agree with dgandhi, I think that you're allowed to have your opinions and if he shares it in an orderly fashion I don't think he should be fired for that. He should have just held his tongue, but I think it seems like an overreaction to fire him for it.
If people are not allowed to shower the others with their religious nonsense, then she should not flaunt her sex life. It's a sticky situation in any case. Free speech goes both ways - if she can say it, he can criticize it, and vice versa.
Except that its perfectly natural to be excited about an upcoming marriage, straight people can do this without any issue. Also, flaunting it is more like flaunting the death of your sex life than anything else about it.
i'd say let the lions eat him.
The moment you frame a statement in that way you're admitting that you don't actually believe what you're about to say, and are admitting that it's a characteristic of a contrived context of which you have chosen to follow. It's weak, and is specifying a source to lay blame if you happen to be wrong.
Rewind up and say I believe, as a reasonable human being, that blah blah, and see how it sounds then.
Oh, and fuck political correctness. There.
He obviously sees his own personal behavior as deserving to be perfectly acceptable, since it's free of sin, etc. I wonder how many coworker's he's subtly tried to convert?
Course I could be wrong, I just doubt this was the only time he rubbed someone the wrong way.
I work in Massachusetts, and that guy is an idiot. The company he works for, Brookstone, is well known in New England. They expect their employees to be professional. Professionals do not bring up politics or religion in the work place. When your outside of the office or company functions, THEN, you can air your crap about company and the idiots you work for. Just as long as those idiots aren't able to know you said, what you said about them.
While gay marriage is legal in MA, its not as common as straight marriage. Even upon hearing it from someone I knew, I laughed, not realizing they had said it. The person smiled and said she has gotten that already. That it takes a few seconds for the concept to sink in. Afterward I 'congrat' her, and asked who proposed and how.
Massachusetts is a pretty diverse beliefs, when it comes to religion. We have muslims, jews, christians, wiccans, taoists, buddists, athesits, agnostics, and a few who believe the way of the Jedi. Most are Christian. It stems in part, from our puritan roots with the Mayflower and the pilgrims.
Sounds like the guy was fired for being unprofessional, not because he's a christian.
I myself have no problem with gay marriage. Doesn't effect me. I'm not gay.
But I wouldnt have fired him. Id of just introduced him to the coffee boy
but seriously, he shouldnt have been fired imho, however Im not gay and dont really know what its like so yeah.
NO. No no no no no.
I would have
-or-
I would've
-or-
I'd
I'm sorry but the word "of" has no business being in that sentence.
It's not like he is merely saying "I disagree with your views on gay marriage", what he is effectively saying is "Your presence offends me. I disagree with you, everything you stand for, and your right to exist."
Now I should probably go watch it. >_>
edit - Okay, I immediately suspected this guy of being gay the second he opened his mouth. It feels like he's overly sensitive about the subject because his belief in lies and mythology conflict with his genetic makeup. He's not allowed to be what nature has created him as, and he doesn't want to accept the fact that maybe GOD isn't around to make sure that nobody is CREATED as homosexual.
I've no doubts that this kid has serious relationship problems because he is unable to bring himself to have any kind of attraction toward women, and his beliefs won't allow him to accept a man either. But of course, as Christians despise healthy sexuality, he won't allow himself to find out that he simply cannot get aroused by a woman until he misguidedly marries one.
Also, why is it okay for Christians (or any religulous group, really) to openly spout bullshit in the streets, go door-to-door, preach to strangers, etc. about their frighteningly blinding beliefs, but it's not okay for normal people (homosexual or otherwise) to discuss their lives? It's okay for him to make sure everyone knows he's an easily-offended Christian crybaby, but it's not okay for others to be themselves.
This is the one singularly most annoying thing about Christians, I think--their undying oversensitivity and unabashed perspective of self-importance. It's one thing to believe something, but to put yourself above others in such an arrogant way is really what puts them over the top, in terms of human filth.
HOWEVER, I don't believe it was within this employer's ethical responsibility to fire him over his beliefs, no matter how deranged and irritating they may be. Although, this is probably a very biased account, and we don't really know what exactly transpired. He probably got emotional, indignant, and hostile, and THAT was the reason he was terminated. It would be nice to get the other party's side of things.
