They got what they wanted out of life. This was their strongest belief that humans could evolve further if they took the steps they took. And the scientist in me says - you don't know that they didn't achieve what they aimed for.

Example - some people enjoy pain. Most people hate pain. When they find someone that enjoys to hurt them, it's not abuse or assault, and it's nothing to think negatively about. It's their decision, it's what they want to do, it's their life, and you can't take that away from them. I felt vaguely uplifted after hearing them interviewed.. i don't know if that's good or bad.
