The paramagnetic quality of oxygen was explained to me a year or so ago, it's to do with it having 2 unpaired electrons in the 2p orbital and something to do with the anti-bonds of oxygen. I'm sure someone else can explain it better than me.

Should also add, do not try this at home! LOX is nasty stuff to handle and there is a very fine line between burning a splint up fast and an explosion. LOX isn't only used in rocket fuel, it IS rocket fuel, so be extremely careful with it. written by bcglorf
