im about to buy one of those sata caddy's to recover a non-corrupt sata that i dont have hardware to mount... really cool device... can hot swap HD's and output to USB or eSata! i just want one even if i didnt need it. but i do.

i use one for work that is slightly more portable. It has a three sided connector with 2.5" IDE, 3.5" IDE, and SATA connectors, and a USB 2.0 plug for input. It also comes with a separate power adapter with a molex connector.

Very very handy little tool.

Me too, was yours on a month old drive?

I replaced 3 drives with a single 1TB Seagate Barracuda, and on the 31st day (damn you Best Buy) it started clanking on me.

Backups are great unless you've got several hundred GB of data to store. Life would be a lot easier if they'd find a massive storage media that doesn't require moving parts.

I had heard about freezing a hard drive as an attempt to recover data years ago when I first started in IT, but wouldn't you know it, about 4 years ago, I had a drive crash on me. I figured it's dead, what's it going to hurt throwing it in a freezer and trying? It worked. I was able to recover all of my data off the drive; funny thing was, I had to keep re-freezing it, and every time I would, the lifespan of that recovery period shrank. First it ran for about 20 minutes, then 15, then 8, and the last was about 4 minutes before it really croaked. Couldn't believe it. So you heard it here first, it does work and you can recover your data that way. At least it worked for me.
