You shouldn't spend less than ~$600 (US) on anything you plan to do more with than simply look at - and that's for an iaito (blunt version)! Shinkens (sharp ones) are in the regions of many thousands, and you should research your smithies carefully.

The cheap swords may swing around ok initially, but will weaken around the join to the hand-guard.
