Goalkeeper CIWS Naval Defense System

Goalkeeper is a Dutch close-in weapon system, which defends ships against incoming missiles and ballistic shells. The system consists of an autocannon and an advanced radar which tracks incoming fire, determines its trajectory, then aims the gun and fires in a matter of seconds. The system is fully automatic, needing no human input once activated. The name comes from the football/soccer position. The system is made by Thales Navy Netherlands, and over 50 have been produced. The system can also be deployed to protect airfields. The system is seen as the most advanced CIWS in the world.

Goalkeeper uses the same GAU-8 Avenger 30 mm Gatling gun that is used on the A-10 Thunderbolt II.

Using a search radar it identifies, tracks and prioritizes incoming projectiles by order of threat, switching over to engagement radar it tracks and traverses the system to track the threat, then fires at 4200 rounds per minute to obliterate or detonate the warhead with sheer kinetic force.

The CIWS is not just a Dutch thing. Though I am not sure where it originated, the US Navy has been using it for quite sometime. And its not so much the kinetic energy that destroys the warhead, as much as it is the 4200 rounds that just went through it the the time it took to type the upcoming period.
