Geeze, MG. She's using matched linear forces to provide a rotational spin, and the escalator gadget is being used emmergently. I'm slapping those channels back on, and if the science channel guy wants to eject it, let him. But as the engineering channel guidance counselor, THAT one stays!

By that standard we could mark probably every video on the sift as science and/or engineering. Show me a video that doesn't feature gravitational forces in action. Show me a video that doesn't feature a lever, wheel & axle, or an inclined plane somewhere.

Science is usually rigorously enforced, thankfully. A number of the other channels are becoming catch-alls or the channel owner's favorites list. The frickin woohoo channel even says "anything else that we find suitable.." right in its description.

Specious argument. Yes, many videos have gravity in them, no those videos don't usually show the existence of gravity producing a novel or surprising result. Should the Science Channel owner disagree, I would not complain.

I created the engineering channel partly out of frustration that there was no appropriate venue for cool gadgets, cool use of technology, and discussions of same. This is smack dab in the intended area, and I would know that better than anyone. Which doesn't of course, keep you from being snippy, but that's the interwebs.

I removed those channels. If their owners really wanted them in, I wouldn't complain.

I am clearly from a different planet from some of you. To extend the metaphore above, a video that contained gravity as part of the world is not worthy of a science tag. A video taken of two disparate sized objects that were dropped off the tower of Pisa and which landed at the same time would be, even if no words were spoken. Rembar, whatever you want is fine with me.

WRONG. Although it looks like harmless fun, this is absolutely Evolution In Action.

Watch closely right at the end when she's dismounting. That's the dangerous moment. She comes within inches of having her hips caught sideways between the two belts. If she was unlucky, this could easily crush her pelvis, snap or dislocate her upper legs. If she got caught lower it could give her serious fractures to the ribcage and possible spinal damage, death by suffocation, etc.

And I would enjoy a home for gadgets and interesting technology. This video is just someone being goofy on an escalator. Maybe it's what you had it mind when you created the channel; as you say, only you know that for sure; but it's not what I think of when I think "engineering". If there was some explanation of said "matched linear forces" and perhaps ways they are put to more practical use, then I'd think engineering. "Practical ends" is the key part of the definition of engineering. You may argue she's applying science and math principals here, but there's no practical application in sight.

There's no snipping here. I'm just saying categories are pointless if they're not well defined.

I agree with much you say, and I admit my view of engineering may be too broad from many people's point of view, but to me, all it needs to be engineering is the application of science to change the world--including for totally trivial changes such as stuff and nonsense.

I like elegant pranks. I enjoyed ditch day (I'm a Techer). I enjoy Rube Goldberg machines that do nothing but look cool. I like this use of a machine for a completely unintended, possibly dangerous, but very cool result. It's an application of basic physics, using the machine. and the thought that anyone would not think it germane to engineering floors me.

Indeed, perhaps she will leave a trail of freshly erected posts behind her as she spins her way from town to town.

Dag, I suspect the escalators in the Southern hemisphere will spin you in the opposite direction due to the Coriolis effect. In fact, you should exercise extreme caution because the effect in the Southern hemispher may be to turn you inside out as opposed to round and round.

That's my belief too. The application of well-established rules creating a surprising result is one of the most rewarding experiences science can offer, and for this reason, this sift gets to stay in Science.

Thanks for the concerns, though, guys and gals. Science stays a pretty clean channel because of all your input, so keep a sharp lookout.

The other rationale for not getting a woohoo tag, in general, is when the video features ENEMIES of Matt Groening (it being the MG & Friends Appreciation Society).
