I am happy the cops decided to risk looking a bit foolish and try something that didn't result in someone getting shot.

after seeing so much shitty policing in my town it's nice to see cops operate a little more professionally.

Luckily things worked out in this situation... however... getting that close to someone wielding a 3 ft sword is stupid. The chance of one of those officers (or even the asshole) being mortally wounded by that sword in the scuffle is FAR greater then the chance this piece of shit would die via the taser.

I'm with TheSofaKing, a taser shot would've been safer for not only the police but the victim as well.

It looks like the German Shepard got hit a couple of times with the Samurai sword. I think that's what he's stabbing at before they take him down.

I seriously doubt that would have happened in the U.S.A.

I know of at least one incident where a guy was shot about twenty times by three deputies under similar, but far less threatening conditions.

They could have easily shot him, but it took real balls to take the guy down safely. Good on them for giving it a go. *thumbs up*

Also, just a guess, but Hamburg police may not have had tasers readily available to them at the time of the indecent.

Definitely called for a taser or capsicum spray. Getting that close to the sword wielder and subsequently scuffling with him is downright dangerous. One of those cops could have easily been skewered or sliced and then this story would have ended with a mortally wounded officer(s) and potentially a dead suspect.

Notice though, that the cops had big-ass riot shields. Those should help to some extent, no?

That looked like a non-functioning (or whatever) sword - the top was blunted and it couldn't even cut through that little broom top.

To me, it sounded like he hit something solid, the dog seemed fine shortly after and there was no blood or anything on the blade at the station.

Besides, that "sword" looks like you couldn't even cut a bloody cake with it. Probably a decorative piece of junk, though better safe than sorry.

Oh and German cops don't carry tasers as far as i know. Some states, including Hamburg, have them in their arsenal, but only special units use them.

Even brooms can be unconventional...

It is ok for us to sit here and judge the situation from basic video footage, but the cops were there themselves and I am sure they are able to judge whether it was safe to approach.

The police were very good and brave to not have taken the "easy" way out and shot him. If they had tasered him - there is a possibility that he could have died. How do we know he did not have problems mentally? At least taking him in alive they are able to give him a fair trial.

You give a cop a taser and it's likely he'll become too trigger happy and instead of using brains and techniques, a cop could easily become lazy and just tase people when ever a situation become sticky without thinking about it first.

That was no samurai sword. That was a double sided straight blade with a rectangular hilt. The katana has a blade on one side, and a slight curve. Upvote for sillyness though.
