Why did God make my penis my moral barometer?

Apparently, this 'expert' forgot that, according to the Bible, there's no such thing as dating.

Goes back to the comments I made about Kirk Cameron's pulltheplugonatheism.com.

If he had said "ask him if he's a christian, and if not run away" he would have gotten a lot of backtalk. You wouldn't get away with calling a Jew or an Islamic person amoral because they didn't share your world view, why the hell is it okay to do that to atheists?

I'm an atheist, and just yesterday I was punching an old woman into submission.

So I have to admit, he's spot on.

Sounds like sage advice from somebody who has been through a divorce. Why isn't he listening to his "moral compass"?

written by rottenseed  | 7 months ago | CH

Also, what if this was a white guy, telling people not to date black people?

because they have no morals? And the host's only reply was "yeah".

Hard to see how either of them would ever get a paid gig on TV again.

Atheists need a hardcore movement. Racism didn't make sense and neither does religion.

Hehehe, I don't mind it. Any woman who would actually listen to that advice, I wouldn't be interested in dating. It all works itself out. (Of course, I'm married, so I don't have to worry about it at all anyway)

Fuck Steve Harvey and fuck you. Atheism "needs a movement" like I need a bowel movement on my face. You and I probably don't even mean the same thing when we say we're atheist. Stop acting as if NOT believing in something gives us any common ground.

This really is disgusting. As others have said, why is it A OK to belittle and hate and pour such scorn on someone for not believing in a god, and yet it's utterly horrendous and worthy of a beating to do the same for someone who DOES believe in a god.

Horrible, horrible, narrow minded little shits all of them.

Believe what the f*ck you like in a supreme being, but don't hate others just because they don't. That's so very, very bigoted.

I think the advantages of rationalism/atheism start to kick in above a certain education level.

If you're socializing below a certain threshold, religions might provide a rudimentary moral system that's better than nothing.

(In European and Asian cultures anyway... but it's probably a different story in e.g. Afghanistan.)

A curious posit. So, are you suggesting that the morality of atheists is directly related to education? I.E. a atheist in high-school must therefore have a weaker moral system than an atheist in college?
Or are you suggesting that morality does not effectively exist until a person is educated?
Or are you saying that morality of a non-secular origin is superior to secular morality?

Personally, I don't see morality as being intrinsically tied to education. I've met uneducated men who had stronger, more logical moral centers than college professors. I see education as doing almost nothing in creating morality except to supply people with a common base of knowledge with which to discuss the subject.

Atheist is the new Pagan! No longer do I get mean stares and whispered 'he's a devil worshiper' (which I am not) when people who know I am pagan walk by. Now they don't give two shits, because they have a new 'evil'.. the evil of the Atheist.

I feel sorry for you Atheists, I have dealt with religious persecution in one way or another for many years, though people are slowly waking up to the fact that we aren't evil. But you're story is just beginning.

That and I love how Christians think if your not Christian your not moral. Where do you think they got their morality? Moses? Give me a break. From Pagan ideas, just like where they got their original holy symbol, their holidays, etc.. etc.

Define "pagan". There's a lot of definitions and it can cause lot of confusion as to what somebody means when they use the word.

Though it is quite well known that the highly educated are far more likely to be atheist, I think the morality factor is a result of the depth of self-reflection. However, those who are self-reflective enough to develop their own reality-based morality systems are more likely to be the type of person who also seeks knowledge of the world. Thus the education and morality go hand in hand, but are not dependent on one another, so there will be exceptions.

Though I am an atheist, I date women without regard to their beliefs, as long as they are comfortable with my rationalism. However, if I ever found out that the girl I was dating didn't go to college, that would make me much more doubtful that the relationship could ever go anywhere.

I really don't blame Steve Harvey for the beliefs he shared. His heart is in the right place, he's just coming from a place of deep ignorance that has been embedded in him from his community, just like anybody else who thinks religion and morality are linked in any way.

I think morality is, for the most part, a biological instinct that has helped us maintain small functional tribes of people. We used to need this tribe to survive and those with certain traits counterproductive to the collective goal were cast out of the tribe and left to fend for himself and more importantly, not mate and pass those traits on, while those with traits that benefited the tribes were commended, rewarded, and sometimes idolized and of course they got to spread their seed. So through the process of evolution, most of us have a common set of guidelines to live by. Of course, the brain is very complex and some will still be born with some "screws loose".

Ethics on the other hand, is something for the knowledge seeking, highly educated human to discuss.

God as a moral barometer?

So, that must mean he likes the rules set forth in the Bible, I assume. He failed to mention that the Biblical view of marriage is polygamy and that there was no dating during Biblical times. Fathers gave their daughters in marriage to whom they choose at an age as young as 14 or so.

Also, Paul states in 1 Corinthians 7
"12To the rest I say this (I, not the Lord): If any brother has a wife who is not a believer and she is willing to live with him, he must not divorce her. 13And if a woman has a husband who is not a believer and he is willing to live with her, she must not divorce him. 14For the unbelieving husband has been sanctified through his wife, and the unbelieving wife has been sanctified through her believing husband. Otherwise your children would be unclean, but as it is, they are holy.

15But if the unbeliever leaves, let him do so. A believing man or woman is not bound in such circumstances; God has called us to live in peace. 16How do you know, wife, whether you will save your husband? Or, how do you know, husband, whether you will save your wife?"

I suppose he doesn't want to be bothered by details.

Pick and choose. Make assumptions. Say you have faith in God. Bam! You just became a moral leader, even if you can't prove what you say.

when will people stop judging a person's entire character based on their religion? religion is just one thing. there are plenty of other characteristics to judge people on. it's been established (time and again) that religion and morals are not necessarily related: pedophile priests, those that kill in the name of God. there are plenty of atheists out there that are perfectly normal respectable people, just like there are plenty of catholics who are absolute dicks. but a lot of people forget that there's also plenty of catholics who would just as soon "love thy neighbor" and plenty of atheists who use that as an excuse to call the religious folk stupid idiots. it goes both ways on both sides, so how bout we stop using that as a barometer of character? yea, i know, the US is generally run by the christian standards, "under god" is in the pledge of allegiance, etc etc. but it might be time for a change. who's with me?

No, I was not describing Christianity, it isn't a minority (Xianity 76%, atheist/agnostic 15%), and it is unheard of (and technically illegal) to discriminate against Xians, mind you striking down laws based on Xian dogma isn't discrimination, that's just the separation of church and state rearing it's ugly head.

If I had been describing Christians, and Christianity by extension, I would have said described them much the same way you, Winston, would describe Muslims, a deeply disturbed people, hell bent on oppressing every person that doesn't believe they way they do.

it is unheard of (and technically illegal) to discriminate against Xians,

This thread and many other 'atheist' threads prove otherwise. Slander, hate-speech, insults, prejudice, mockery, and misrepresentation are discrimination. Consider that when the next 'athiest' thread starts up and people start making broad, sweeping statements about religion and people who are religious.
