Because hardly any of the jokes actually stem from the story, unlike, say, The Simpsons or South Park. Family Guy is like one of those old stand-up comedians who tells mother-in-law joke after mother-in-law joke, but doesn't have a real story to tell.
I really hated the characters of the show.. but like south park, theres always atleast one joke an episode that has me chuckling, even if it is just a poop joke.
