It's scary as hell that people do this, but they do it because they can (the leaders), and because there are always abused and mistreated people around who will be susceptible to this kind of indoctrination.

The government is doing real harm by keeping moms away from their kids.

But seriously, you have to see what hurts the child less. Of course a child is hurt by being removed from its parents, but that hurt can be a lot less that keeping them there. Remember these women have the right to choose to do what they do, but they do not have the right choose for their child if it is dangerous. So removing the children is the lesser of two evils.

I give you the stolen generation as an example of what happens when modern, moral, society breaks apart families.
^ Abducted, you hit the nail on the head. Yes, these people are creepy weirdos to us. But snatching their kids away and putting them in foster care because we find their culture not in step with today's mores is not a good answer.
This may be the most controversial position I've ever taken, but it's worth it...
Let's take a somewhat unrealistic hypothetical scenario, and tell me how you would avoid it:
Scenario
1. There's a stupid cult called the froods that supports censorship.
2. Frood dogma commands that they indoctrinate their children so thoroughly that a child of a frood has a 75% chance of remaining a frood for the rest of his life.
3. Frood dogma commands froods to have at least 10 children.
4. Frood population grows until they take over the "democratic" government with sheer numbers of their brainwashed offspring, and then they repeal freedom of speech.
Possible Solutions:
1. universal 2-child policy prevents any one small cohort from taking over via multiplication, and helps apostasy overcome the rate of indoctrinating new children.
2. Try to deprogram their children to increase the apostacy rate beyond 80% so that the Froods stop growing in number and population growth slows before we all starve to death.
What is so deeply troubling about this scenario is that democracy is fundamentally meaningless if people are so closed-minded that they merely inherit the ideas of their parents or social cohort, and thus reproduction rates determine votes. Many people are too smart for that, as most ideologies have decent apostasy rates in the teens of percentage, but it is not enough apostasy to compensate for extremely high fertility rates.
I think it is time to recognize that having children is one of the deepest effects one can have on a society, and therefore reproduction should be somewhat regulated by law with the common good in mind. Human civilization and environment may be very adversely affected by a trillion unilateral decisions to have excessive numbers of children.
Of course it is troubling to restrict any freedom, but benefits far outweigh the costs. Having excessive numbers of children would not be a victimless crime; the victims would be the children themselves and the whole of society that has to deal with the environmental degradation and infrastructure burden of an unsustainably high world population.
Take a step back for a moment. We are NOT free. We have some freedoms with qualified guarantees. The primary limitation of our freedoms is the restriction on harming other people, including your own children. If society deems your lifestyle is harmful to your children, they can and should be taken from you to break the lifestyle cycle. Society codifies what is harmful in laws and courts. As a group, we have determined that polygamy is questionable, but underage marriage and forced marriage are strictly forbidden, synonymous with rape.
These women, crying, smiling, and begging to be reunited with their children, support a lifestyle that includes child rape. IT ENDS. That's it. Period.
If those women ever realize that forced/underage marriage is terribly wrong, then and only then should they be allowed to be brought back together.
This isn't about culture. This is psychological. This relates much more to the movie 'Born Into Brothels'.
Their mothers speak like zombies because their souls have basically been murdered. They have learned that rape is a way of life, a means to an end. They have overridden the little voices in their consciousness that were telling them that was was happening to them was wrong. That's when they died.
If the children stay in this situation, they will perpetuate this. And the sons are just as much victims as the daughters.
A spattering of women have escaped this situation. Hopefully these women (hey, and why leave the men out?) get intense psychological help to see if they can be re-awakened, in which case they have a chance of being suitable parents.
But this doesn't compare with cultural assimilation any more than leaving the family of a wife-beater together for family's sake does.
Get the kids out before they die inside.
