Ive flown gliders before and we used to get launched up in the air by a powerful turbo diesel winch 1 km away from us. It was also very exciting every start.
When the winch started to pull you had to pull up and the harder you pulled the higher your end altitude would be. But if you pulled too hard the predetermined breaking point in the cable would break. It was awesome. The Gs were so fucking tense, and then the PBP blew, it was even cooler.
