Transcript:

KING: E-mail from Mrs. Gonzalez in Elizabeth, New Jersey. "Mr. Fox, I would like to know how you feel about the possibility of having a Latin America united with one currency?"

FOX: Long term, very long term. What we propose together, President Bush and myself, it's ALCA, which is a trade union for all of the Americas. And everything was running fluently until Hugo Chavez came. He decided to isolate himself. He decided to combat the idea and destroy the idea...

KING: It's going to be like the euro dollar, you mean?

FOX: Well, that would be long, long term. I think the processes to go, first step into is trading agreement. And then further on, a new vision, like we are trying to do with NAFTA.

Check you're geography: Latin America consists of countries south of Mexico. It does not consist of the U.S or anything further north.

Thanks for clarifying this. There's an awful lot of media on this subject right now and I'm not sure what to make of it. It's gotta be important to keep putting it out there for general discussion and consumption.

For America to be invested in an "Amero" would mean that the joint countries would have to be at the same socio-economic level for it to transition as smoothly as the Euro did. To be honest I see America adopting the Euro before making an Amero. But like Fox says, it's a long, long ways away. Probably won't happen in my lifetime.

Canadian bankers have said that a common currency would help "balance the highs and lows of Canada's economy" which relies heavily on trade with the US. Canadian businesses want it because the rise in value of Canadian currency against the US dollar has hurt their sales to the US.

America, Mexico and Canada signed an agreement in 2005 which merges the countries into the North American Union, exactly like the EU. All of this was done behind closed doors with no approval from congress - and no vote from the public.

No official currency has been designed and the pictures floating around of the amero coin are pure fantasy, but what we can say with certainty is that the foundations have been laid for a North American Union common currency and people need to start thinking about the ramifications of this, positive and negative. The question of sovreignty and who makes the decisions and writes the laws that affect day to day life is of the utmost importance.

As a sidenote, the UK held a vote on this very issue, and the public voted against adopting the euro - so a precedent exists.

Centralised government on a national level in the UK has adversly affected things like hospitals and schools and had positive effects on the economy and the rich. Centralised government on an international level is a huge and very serious issue and whilst it has always been a good idea in principle, we have to take a hard look at the people who are running the show and a harder look at the track records.

Indymedia has claims of the Amero currency being in place by 2010.

Always bear in mind that the priority of government has always been its economy, this is more important to government than the well being of its citizens. Count how many times you hear the word 'economy' on the evening news in relation to each story.
