while i did appreciate the movie i have to disagree about this being a great adaptation. we lost an entire storyline about the citizens of Trachimbrod in the shuffle.

^agreed dmaze, especially the first time I watched it after reading the book. However, now that I'm a bit distanced from the book, I can see the need to pare it down to the present storyline, while still capturing the spirit of the characters through a few made-for-film elements... Besides, I don't think the Trachimbrod back story would have had any justice done to it as a film, particularly the internal conflicts and some of the more surreal elements of that plotline.

The back story was my favorite part of the book though - that and Alex's dialogue.

Having never read the book, I was absolutely floored by the brilliance of this movie. My wife, who normally doesn't like these type of movies, was equally as shocked as to how good it was. The cinematography itself is worth watching (e.g. the sunflowers surrounding the house).

Thanks for the wonderful reminder of this film to us all!
