I fail to see why this could be interpretted as funny and why anyone would upvote this. Its a fact that if we didnt go over there liberate Europe TWICE they would be either speaking German or in an oven of some kind. That cost alot of lives. Funny how this prick thinks its funny. I think the point some of you (and Doug Stanhope) may be missing is taking personal ownership in your homeland's legacy may be a good thing. Yes, of course, you may sound like a douche when you go spouting your "America is #1!!" to everyone when you have taken no part of it. Some of us, however, still serve our country through civic and government service, and much can be gained from taking pride, not credit, in the accomplishments of your predecessors.

Germany still takes WWII personally, as they have criminalized denying the holocaust and taken large steps to ensure they never fall under the rule of a militant dictator. Kudos for them for not saying, "Oh, those Nazi's weren't us, that was our grandparents. It's not our fault, so we don't have to care about it"

These are fleetzes words not mine. Then after he puts these words in my mouth fleetze calls me a twit and got two upvotes for it...

What I said was "it cost alot of lives". I was talking about American lives which is what fleeze picked up on apparently.

But that exchange really proves my point. This whole subject is not one that should be joked about. Which is exactly the point I did NOT miss, when I did not upvote this. Everyone else is upvoting this becuase they think its funny or clever or insightfull. I think its disrespectful to the American sacrifcies in the WWs. But I see American bashing is in full swing on these boards. Some subjects no matter how they are approached are just are not funny.

When people spout that bit about America saving the French, they conveniently forget that "we" were just returning the favor. Without the help of the French in the Revolutionary War, we would all be speaking, well, English...but with a funny accent.

Or is there some arbitrary statute of limitations for saving someone's butt?

If I had the power of the star, I would downvote this. His point is valid, but it's just not funny. It hurts to see Bill Hicks mentioned in reference to this.

This is just another spin off the old "when team X wins, it's MY team.. we won! when it loses - THEY lost".

I can hardly watch him without thinking of the horrible "second editon" of the Man Show, which failed so hard (for me anyway).

I hope someday we get beyond nationalism - which to me is just tribalism on a larger scale - brought about by our monkey pack loving primate brains.

We're all human beings and citizens of the earth - the French are not them and we are not we.

I don't know if we'll ever manage to overcome our biology though

gwiz665, this clip may not be the best one from Doug's set that is reminiscent of the social satire Bill Hicks was so great at. I do find this bit funny, as I can relate to the things he says, but whatever that's all relative. I really do recommend looking into more of his work to get a full scope of his ideals and talent (despite the travesty that was "The Man Show"). As I respect Bill Hicks' work, I would never reference him in vain. Then again, different comics affect you different ways, so who knows.

It may be that my sense of humor, concerning Stanhope, has been tarnished by the man show, but I'm not keen on his delivery. Oh well, different tastes, I suppose.

I have no problem with the subject of the bit though. In my opinion there are very few things that cannot be joked about.

i think his point is maybe more subtle... he is saying you don't have a right to bask in the glory of previous generations who were born on the same patch of land as you... UNLESS... you do something yourself to carry on the legacy.

if you just eat burgers and say "usa is number one because of stuff that happened 60 years ago that i saw on the history channel" then you are out of line, even disrespectful to previous generations.
