Yes, because if nothing else he comes across as very honest. You can also tell that this case was probably the most fun the judge had all day (court is mostly boring). She didn't let it affect her decision, but I could see others letting him off. Being over confident can be annoying but it's a lot better than people who go to court and do nothing but lie to make themselves look innocent. I'm sure it has worked to some degree in the past.
