"British novelist Doris Lessing won the 2007 Nobel Prize for literature on Thursday for a body of work that looked unflinchingly at society's ills and inspired a generation of feminist writers.

Lessing was shopping when the news of her Nobel broke and learned of it from reporters gathered outside her London house."

Last words " ... it's a royal-flush" hilarious. I think this definitely belongs here. I found her disdain really entertaining.

I wish I knew more about what the person who I took to be her son or younger friend said about that meaning some particular professor must have died. This will mean I look into her work. I haven't read her since High School when someone forced me to read The Golden Bowl and I hated it (that's the way to force anyone to hate anything). I didn't even know she had written works considered science fiction.

from the Reuter's article:

"Lessing said an official connected with the Nobels once came up to her at a 'very, very formal dinner' in Sweden and told her she would never win the prize. 'Can you imagine the cheek?' she said."

Apparently she's been on the short list for over 30 years, and was presumably blackballed by this official every time. I think it may have had something to do with her science fiction writing, as it was such a departure from her earlier work, but that's just speculation on my part.

From my good buddy's blog, he had this to say about the same video you posted:

"Her under-the-breath "Oh Christ" is worth checking out. For the cameras she's all world-weary and "seen it all before", sure, but once she goes inside I'm sure she does at least a tiny jig."

lol blankfist! I wonder if the imagined jig is for winning, or for outlasting the smug dick who blackballed her!

oxdottir, prepared to be stultifyingly bored to tears, or insulted that your time was wasted voluntarily, by yer desire to become more, "well-rounded"....let a down vote, say what the Swiss can't seem to ever get right.....

What a wonderful way to handle reporters who were bent on making up her mind for her as to what her feelings should be. This deserves top 15, but I doubt it'll make it. Thanks for saving it.
