Digital forensics shows Oswald photo was not faked

Dartmouth Computer Scientist Hany Farid has new evidence regarding a photograph of accused John F. Kennedy assassin Lee Harvey Oswald. Farid, a pioneer in the field of digital forensics, digitally analyzed an iconic image of Oswald pictured in a backyard setting holding a rifle in one hand and Marxist newspapers in the other. Oswald and others claimed that the incriminating photo was a fake, noting the seemingly inconsistent lighting and shadows. After analyzing the photo with modern-day forensic tools, Farid says the photo almost certainly was not altered.

Not bad. It would have been better if he'd been able to dynamically alter the angle of the light source in his 3D model. Like, drag the sun higher & lower...here's what the shadows look like at 5:00 pm, here's what they look like at high noon...allowing us to see that, yes, the body and nose shadows fall correctly. Capice?

Very interesting, but far from conclusive.

So you think the alterers of this were either magic...or way way WAY ahead of their time? It's pathetic that this conspiracy theory has wasted soo much time and money of people who obsess over it rather than figuring out something constructive to do. Something that might actually help people, rather than holding conferences on just which mob boss was involved with the CIA to assassinate Kennedy.

It seems that this would only demonstrate that either the photo isn't a fake, or that whoever faked it was sufficiently informed about the conditions at the time the photo of the head was taken, so as to be able to reproduce similar conditions when taking the photo of the body. Now, that wouldn't seem very far-fetched if both photos were taken with the intention of producing a composite photograph, which, if you're into conspiracies, isn't particularly far-fetched in itself. It wouldn't be all too difficult to arrange if both photos were taken with the same camera, on the same roll of film on subsequent days and then developed at the same time.

But that's irrelevant, really, and so is this whole faked photos and magic bullet bullshit. Distractions - there's a lot more evidence for a conspiracy in witness testimony, evidence already buried, confidential files not yet released, and the like.

Just.... get a guy in a similar position at different times of the day and see where the fucking shadows fall.

People get so confused so easily about this stuff. He's just using a computer to do it. They could still do it yourself, if they didn't have computers.

But my comment is nothing to do with whether or not the conspiracy is true, i don't know/care, i wasn't even aware there was one regarding this photo, i'm not from your neck of the woods

all conspiracy theorists know that LHO had an identical twin, who was working in the government, and posed for said photo. Yes it's a real photo, of a real man, posing to be his twin brother. Of course the footage of the moon landing was real film, it was simply filming a fake moon in a studio. come on people!

(for those who lack sarcasm detector, the above statement is sarcasm)

If you have any respect for people like James Randi, Michael Shermer, or anyone who uses scientific methods, then you already understand that witness testimony is possibly the most unreliable way of getting at any truth, and more often than not, completely opposite of the truth.

First video I've ever upvoted before seeing it. Why?, which you're probably not wondering at all. As I pressed play, my browser crashed, and restarted with the video I was watching before this one.

Clearly he is part of the conspiracy!!!! zomg

See? it's true.

Um.. isn't there a really easy and obvious explanation..? In the photo the light comes from his left and he has his head rotated and tilted to that side. Why was this ever a mystery/conspiracy?

You can replicate that straight nose shadow while still standing to the left or right of the light source in front of the bathroom mirror if you like and have the time
