I slightly disagree with Blumenthal in his statement that the religious right so influences the republican base and even IS the republican base. Once the elections are over, the Republican's have historically almost severed themselves from the religious right and really do nothing for them as they do nothing for the nation in general. The problem is that the ignorance belt is so loaded with registered voters that they have to be pandered to and that's what they're doing now.
