Wow! That's awesome! He just convinced me that drum machines aren't all that bad.

Toontrack EZ Drummer, is a VSTi Virtual instrument thats got pre-recorded "real" drum sounds and gives you the ability to play drum machines or electronic drums and assigning those sounds to it through midi signals instead of the crappy General Midi sounds.

The pedal his left foot is playing is a Hi-Hat controller which allows him to " open" and "close" the Hi-Hat so when he hits the Hi Hat button it plays a different sound depending on the pressure he is putting on the pedal.

EZ Drummer is a software package that contains a metric assload of drum samples (gigs and gigs of them). It translates your input and picks the sample to play. There might be, for example, 20 snare samples in a given kit. If you play THIS hard you get sample 15 and if you play ThIs hard you get sample 10, etc. There are sometimes even more than one sample for one velocity level, so that if you do a drum roll or a sequence of hits it doesn't sound like a fake drum machine.

The other big maker of software like that is "Drummer from Hell". They're both quite impressive.
