Kipping? Looks more like cheating.

My spine turned into a whimpering pretzel while I was watching that.

but it's trendy and cool so it must be good.

.. doesn't everybody know this? QM is right, it's just a cheated pullup now with a new name. You'd be better off knowing how to do this but the actual motion not too useful as an exercise. The energy spent would be better off doing regular pullups or if needed assisted pullups.

ChosenOne - I thought that at first too, but then realized that this looks like a different form of exercise that exercises aerobically and uses "explosive" force across much more of the body's overall muscle mass, rather than "strength" of muscle solely in the upper body. It's very different from a pull-up, but might be highly beneficial in a totally different way.

Not only is it bad for your body, its also dangerous.

When working out, you should never rely on momentum. Its not safe.

Lulz at the cheating pull-up marketed to marketing victims as a "more effective pull-up." More effective at straining your writs elbows and shoulders perhaps.

"transferring horizontal momentum into vertical momentum" IS CHEATING WHEN YOU'RE DOING PULL-UPS.

What a load of trendy bullshit. "The kipping pullup is BRAND X's official pull-up." OH SIGN ME UP THEN PLEASE LET ME HAVE TWO MEMBERSHIPS I'LL BE TWICE AS FIT!!!!111! I bet "lady push-ups" are their official push-up.

If you want core and hip strength from pull-ups, incorporate L-sits and torso rotations into your pull-ups.

Yeah the idea of the pull-up is to make it hard and slow to exert yourself the most. Cheating to get more reps doesn't really help with your strength.

Moving this video to calvados's personal queue. It failed to receive enough votes to get sifted up to the front page within 2 days.

few things in life hurt more than the first week of crossfit....these are deceptively brutal.

for what its worth, crossfit uses all types of pull-ups...dead hang, kipping, l-sit, and jumping. they all serve different purposes. kipping pull-ups spread the work over more muscle groups...i.e the legs and core. given that one can perform the movement almost twice as fast as a dead hang, the output power (f*d/t, which impacts muscle growth) is almost doubled.

in a pull-up contest which specifies dead hang only, kipping would indeed be "cheating". interestingly enough, athletes who train with kipping pull-ups rather than dead hangs usually win such contests, even when the form is restricted to dead hangs only.

Next up, the "kneeling pushup"

Wow, couch experts for the win. The idea of the kipping pull-up in the context of a Crossfit workout is, as imstellar28 pointed out, to maximize the power output. It's not a pure strength exercise, it's meant to get your pulse racing and your lungs screaming for air. Also a proper kip requires a surprising amount of coordination, especially when you're so gassed you can barely see in front of you.

Try doing "Tabata something else" - pull-ups, pushups, situps and squats (in that order), for each exercise 8 rounds of 20seconds work, 10 seconds rest, aiming for max repetitions, no rest between exercises. Do that with kipping and tell me the pull-ups were easy, or that you could have gotten a better stimulus from doing dead-hangs.This is not bodybuilding, it's not meant to isolate muscles, it's not meant to make you big and bulky - Crossfit is meant to make you fast, agile and strong (and a bunch of other things as well.) The kipping pull-up lets you keep up intensity in a workout instead of letting your pulse drop down while you do dead-hangs.
