I admit I don't get sports a lot of the time.. whenever I see baseball, when the base person catches the ball the runner just sort of slinks off without them ever tagging them with the ball.. Are there different rules for different kinds of baseball where you have to touch the runner with the ball or not?

You have to tag the player in all cases UNLESS it is a forced play, then you can tag the player or the base.

Your next question: What is a forced play?
A forced play is when the player has to move to the next base because the last base they were at has become occupied by the next runner. (example. If you are on 1st and someone hits the ball, you have to move to 2nd because the next runner - that just hit the ball - is on his way to 1st.)

Note: When running to 1st, you can over-run the base as long as you don't' turn towards second. You can automatically walk back and stand on the base without worrying about being tagged out.

I understand baseball pretty well, but I'm not clear on one thing: if the bases are loaded and you are forced home, can the catcher tag home base to get you out? I know it never really happens because any hit is gonna be fielded and thrown to a base which will be closer/easier to get the out. But if it did, what's the rule? anyone?

Yes, the catcher can tag home plate. And it happens more than you might think. If the bases are loaded and there are less that 2 outs, the infielder usually play a little closer in so they can force the runner at home and avoid a run.

Working fine in Firefox 3.0.1 here. As far as addons, IE Tab allows you to use IE from within Firefox with the click of a button to switch between the two.
