Couch Surfing (stay anywhere in the world for free) (3min)

Couch surfing is a free community that you sign up for and network with other couch surfers who are willing to put you up in their homes for a night or two for free (despite the report, you don't need to host someone first). The idea is that someone gets to practice their language skills with you, get to hang out with somebody for however long, and show them around. "Friends you haven't met yet."

Some places let you stay on a couch, some a bed, some for one night, some for a week, some host one person, some twelve.

The great part about it is that instead of wasting money on hotels or hostels, you can stay with a local and get to see the city for what it really is, make a friend, and learn more than you would on your own.

I've been using couchsurfing.com for over 3 years now - hosting more than surfing. This video really hits the point home that the real benefit isn't the free place to stay, but the access to locals who become immediate friends and often tour guides. You get introduced to local flavor that is damn near impossible to come by when staying in a hotel. Couchsurfing has changed my life. And I don't use that phrase flippantly.

As it gets more main stream recognition I wonder how the site will change. Surely we'll get a lot of free loaders who don't appreciate the spirit of the community. I wonder if the network of trust built into the profiles will hold up.

Cool!

I would so have signed up and hosted and couch surfed before my little guy came into the world!
