Cop Smashes Cell Phone For Recording Him

Deputy US Marshal captured on video snatching camera from woman's hands and smashing it on sidewalk during biker gang bust
The 53-second video features footage of the unnamed woman recording an incident involving multiple officers in South Gate, southern California
The woman is then approached by a tall man with a riffle who wrestles the cell phone from her
He then throws it to the pavement and then kicks it in a fit of rage
U.S. Marshals spokesperson has said the shocking footage 'is being reviewed', while the L.A. County Sheriff's Department is also investigating

Let's see...we've got assault and battery, armed robbery, destruction of private property, destruction of evidence...and probably a few more crimes here. I won't be surprised in the least if there's not a single crime charged, however.

Police are proving conclusively that they are NOT protecting, serving, or upholding the law. Since they refuse to police themselves, I'm thinking it's time to disband the criminal gang and start again, they've all failed time and time again to be honest and upright people, much less proper authorities. If cops policed themselves, the other cops would have tackled this cop, jumped on his head, hog tied him, and carted him off to jail....but that's NEVER happened, not a single time, ever, no matter what kind of murderous crime the cop commits in front of his fellow officers. In my mind, that means they are not real cops and so not deserving of respect or compliance.
How about a ballot initiative to remove any 'protective custody' for officers sent to prison, so they have to go to gen pop like every one else? Then they might think twice...assuming some are prosecuted...because it would no longer be summer camp with other cops, it would be real prison.

Sadly another bad apple to spoil the bunch.

Colorado has a 'Right to Record' bill in legislature that would allow fines up to $15,000 if a police officer seized or destroyed a recording like this. It would also require owner permission or a warrant to gain access to the recording.

lantern53says...

More hyperbole from newtboy...because he sees one arrest, he assumes all cops act this way, all arrests end this way, etc.

In 2012 there were over 12,000,000 arrests in the US for misdemeanors and felonies. I've personally seen over 2500 arrests up close and personal and I've never seen a cell phone thrown to the ground.

So while this cop acted like an ass, it doesn't mean this is normal or usual or anything else. It's a single instance.

Mordhaussays...

I'm nowhere near the point of saying scrap the entire system. It needs to be fixed, with real investigation and harsh punishments to weed out these people, but you don't do away with the entire concept.

You refine it, you look for characteristics that indicate a person is going to make an exemplary officer and you start selecting off that guide. You reverse the militarization trend and remove government subsidies that are turning the police into private militias. Last but not least, you make it clear that police are held to a higher standard. You hold THEM to a zero tolerance policy.

Believe me, if we took some simple steps, a significant amount of the bad police would be gone in weeks. Then we could replace them with qualified people.

newtboysaid:

newtboysays...

I wasn't quite clear. I don't mean scrap the system. I mean replace the officers, and train the new ones how to behave PROPERLY, and insist on severe punishment for any infraction. When the rule enforcer breaks the rules, they should have to pay twice what non-enforcers pay for the same crime...with no coddling in "protective custody".
I also agree with reversing the militarization. People will use the tools you give them...if you give them tools of war, they'll commit acts of war with them. Seems obvious to me.
My issue is that the "good cops" NEVER go after the bad cops themselves....as I see it, that makes them accessories after the fact, and also bad cops for obstructing justice. I'm fine with keeping any cop that's testified AGAINST another cop, even one that has documentation proving they stopped another cop from taking things too far. The rest need to go, IMO. They have all been complacent in the face of their own being criminal, and I'm simply not OK with that.
I do agree, simply enacting a zero tolerance policy for ANY officer misconduct, and stricter punishment than normal citizens get for the same infraction would remove most "bad cops" right away...but only if their fellow officers no longer cover up for them. With what we have today, there's no prosecution because they can't make a case when most officer crime happens off camera and the only witnesses either lie or refuse to testify. That's why I say they ALL need to go, and be replaced with new people who take the job knowing it's not a power trip and abuse won't be tolerated a whit. I also think they should have to waive their right to not talk, even self incriminate, in order to wield the authority they wield. I know it won't happen, but a newt can dream.

I listened a few times, but all I could understand was "I'm have a right to be here" and "you need to stay away from ...." and "I have a right to film". I also caught the other officers cheering "yay!" when he smashed her phone. There was a lot I just can't pick out over the other noise though, she was 'pushing buttons' it seemed, but that's no where near justification for the criminal reaction.

littledragon_79said:

I wonder what she was saying the whole time leading up to that?

Mordhaussays...

That makes more sense and I agree. I think that a lot of the good cops are scared of the reaction of the system when reporting bad ones. I think many of them would be far more willing to point out bad cops if they didn't fear retribution by other cops or even their superiors.

Most police officers are good, therefore bad cops aren't a problem = BULLSHIT

Even if most officers are good, it doesn't excuse the behavior of rogues. If someone acted like an inexcusable and physically abusive dick around me and I were his peer, I would go help out the person whose property was mishandled. Why is that not the case in the law enforcement industry?

That's straight up BS on the part of every authoritarian and authoritarian sympathizer out there. This type of groupthink should NOT occur. It wasn't even the one cop, it was the whole bunch at this scene who witnessed the crime occur and failed to bring it under control.

It's pathetic alpha male surrounded by acquiescing beta males. That's the main problem right there. It's a systemic problem, not a single bad apple here and there type of social issue.

police have strict procedure and protocol to follow and should be held accountable when those officers step over the line.in fact, they should be held to higher standard then the rest of us because they wield immense power and authority over us normal citizens.

what REALLY burns my balls is that YOU should be the first to call these little turd-nuggets out on their bullshit, but no,what do we get from you on a consistent basis:

whining and crying on how people just dont understand how hard your job is and that we cannot even conceive the pressure a police officer is under,

now maybe their is some truth to all that but nobody put a gun to your head forced you to be a police officer.so dont act like you didnt know what you were getting into, that is just pathetically weak.stop acting like a pussy and man up.

should this officer get fired?
or arrested?
fined?
jailed?

i really have no idea but how about some goddam accountability?
how about consequences for bad decisions?
how about holding your profession to a higher standard than that of a common fucking thug?
where is your goddam pride?

My point is that cops ARE treated differently, and quite often more harshly than citizens, i.e. they lose their job and pension over things that regular people do who don't lose everything.

Do a google search for 'cop fired' and you'll find over 97,000,000 links, so it's not like cops don't get fired. Cops also get suspended, demoted in rank, prosecuted, etc.

My problem with you people is not that you post these videos, but that you paint ALL police officers as corrupt, racist, bullying, etc.

If I did the same with a minority, post a video of bad behavior, then painted all those people as having the same poor behavior, I would be a racist.

If you trashed my phone like that should you lose you job? Say this occurs at your work. I come up to you and start filming. Should you loose you job? As you said "we've got assault and battery, armed robbery, destruction of private property,..." The answer is no.

The cop was a dick and should pay for a new phone and apologize to the lady. His supervisor should reprimand him but not much else, unless its a pattern.

Comparing it to someone else with another job that broke a phone is incorrect. If I broke the phone of one of the people I was doing work for, then yes, I would totally expect to lose my job. If I broke a random persons phone in my spare time, then I would just expect to face normal charges like anyone else.

newtboysays...

Nope, not over reaching in the least. He attacked while armed, that's brandishing/menacing, and assault with a deadly weapon, he ran at her, said something to her while he did it, then touched her, that's assault and battery, he stole her phone, that's grand theft (phones are expensive) smashed it, that's destruction of private property, kicked it at her, that's battery with an object, and he did it all to hide evidence of his actions, that's felony destruction of evidence.

Yes, if I attack you on public property while armed, smack the phone out of your hand, stomp it, then kick it at you while I'm at work, I should be fired AND prosecuted...while you just say "no"? Please explain your logic (or complete lack thereof).

Wow. You really lack the capacity to understand the point of smashing the phone was to stop her from having evidence of their actions? Please explain, who's going to make him pay for a phone or reprimand him when it's a citizen's word against the lies of all (3) officers there? If there wasn't this second video, they, you, and lantern would still be claiming this didn't happen and is just a lefty making up BS to attack good cops...in fact even with the video you and lantern seem to be trying to say that.

It IS a pattern. You've got 3 officers involved here, and not one good one stopping or reporting them. In fact, in all of these daily (or more often) abusive cop videos you almost always see other officers standing by while their fellow officers commit violent crimes, but you NEVER see one of those by standing officers do their job and STOP the abusive cop....NEVER.
That makes it a probable profession-pervasive pattern.

To add to what arghness has said, regardless of the job if one of my employees did this did this to anyone at work at work I'd sure as hell fire them.

This guy's job is to make life and death decisions with that weapon he's got. If he can be riled to the extent he obviously was by some random woman on the sidewalk then he needs to be taken out of that situation.

As for all the 'one bad apple' claims, I've seen plenty of videos of these one bad apples, but I've never seen a single one where any of the other, apparently 'good' cops steps in to stop the bad one. If it's just the guy doing the smashing who's the bad one and every other cop there is a good guy, why does the bad guy feel so comfortable doing what he did? Why do the other cops cheer in support?

If it's a few bad cops then all of these cases would be acted upon and prosecuted. The fact that they aren't shows that all the other guys are implicit in the act. They allow it to continue. There are clearly enough bad apples that they're running the show and the good apples don't get the support they need if/when they show their colours.

A troll is someone who just says something to inflame.

If you can give a reason why you do not agree with someone, then you can't be labeled a troll.

I'd had to agree with Bob, however, that the DOJ is there to push the radical agenda of Obama.

Of course, a lot of the employees of the DOJ, such as FBI agents, are law enforcement types who didn't have the advantage of communist mentors like Obama had (Frank Marshall Davis)..they didn't grow up in Indonesia, worshipping monkey gods and such, so there is a disconnect.
They probably didn't have commie parents like Obama, but now Obama is the boss so they have to give him their due.
So in the case of Ferguson, Obama and holder send FBI agents to investigate, and since they have personal integrity, they do a good job and holder gets nothing.
But my point is this...Obama must have a serious case of cognitive dissonance. here he is raised to know all the faults, all the shortcomings, all the missteps that the US has taken over the years. He has had none of the patriotic, love for the US traditions, etc.
He gets elected, now he's the boss, so he's going to straighten out all the bad things the US has done in the past, he's going to strengthen her historical enemies, and weaken her historical friends, because...the past is just not fair.
Which is why Obama is closer to the muslim brotherhood than to the Lions Club. Also, I don't think he feels much closeness to his black brothers because he's only half-black, he was raised in a privileged white neighborhood, went to Yale, etc. His black criticizers are right...he's not down for the struggle. It never was a struggle for him.
