When I was a kid, my mom told me "If you're ever scared or in trouble, find a teacher, find a cop, and they will help you. They have to help you."

How can we tell our kids that anymore? These days the police are more like a gang, more concerned about not being disrespected than actually "serving and protecting" people.

In MA, police have two groups of watchman: Internal Investigations, and Elected Officals. Believe it or not, both do look in when stuff like this happens. People want facts and evidence. The video does not have an audio portion, so unfortunately, words spoken come only from the officer and student in question, and any witnesses in the area. I'm not sure which state this happened in, and maybe the checks & balances in that state are different. Stuff like *THIS* would not go well on the guilty party (whether its the officer, student or both).

In our society, one is considered innocent until proven guilty. This video strives to argue the police officer is the guilty party. This will go to a trial, and both sides will have their say on the issue. The matter will either be decided by the jury and/or judge.

While I do not like police who abuse their power for any reason; I do support police in general. Watch the video, but remeber it is only one piece of the full story.

Police state. What right does the cop have to assault this kid? The cop need to be taken to trail and jailed for his assault.

^If the kid had told the cop to go fuck himself it would not in any way have justified the violence that resulted. This officer needs to be brought up on criminal charges.

Assault in the First Degree (1st), with Serious Physical Injury Class A Felony 10-30 years in Prison

http://www.missouri-criminal-defense.com/assault.htm

Simple really, the officer is a Class A felon, and should receive a penalty of no less than 15 to 30 years in prison.

Take a healthy dose of Misanthropy.

There was a cop stationed at my high school, mainly to handle any situations that might come up. That probably isn't the case for all schools, but it isn't unusual.

They call them Student Resource Officers here. They mostly started popping up in the wake of Columbine. I can't imagine anything the kid would have said that necessitated this take down. Even if he had said, "I have a gun and I'm going to shoot you," a rough take down like that doesn't follow what my cop friends have told me about their rules of engagement.

A Canadian, Willard S. Boyle, was yesterday awarded a share of the 2009 Nobel prize in Physics for his part in the invention of the CCD image sensor. I heard him yesterday talking about the significance of his invention, saying its most important use was the fact that those "in authority" have to know that their every action can now be captured and recorded. i couldn't agree more- the more abuses of power like this one are exposed, the the more freedom we will all enjoy.

Nithern: "The video does not have an audio portion, so unfortunately, words spoken come only from the officer and student in question, and any witnesses in the area."

It doesn't matter, the no words other than perhaps "I have a gun and I'm going to kill you now." warrants that kind of violence from the cop, and it would have to be followed by an appearance that the kid was in fact reaching for a weapon.

Of course if any such words were spoken the cop would have dropped his coffee to act immediately instead of putting it carefully on the floor.

Here in Washington cops have an exception to assault called "fighting words". It's pretty much arbitrary but gives them an exception if a suspect tells them to go f@#$ their mother.

Remember kids, every Country and state interprets the fighting words doctrine differently so watch out!

This is not fascism. This is one man assaulting one student with no provocation. That is all.

Followup: The cop seems to have bigger problems. He once shot his ex-wife's new husband 24 times, and managed to claim self defense... He's currently in prison on rape charges.

Is it anger management? What's the common thread in these police assault cases?

I think most of us have had one of those situations where we wished we could just fly off the handle and deck some asshat - teenagers especially have an attitude that they're "cool" for ignoring or rebelling against authority. But we don't, because we're civilized and we realize, even over our irritation and frustration, that there are consequences. (Even if we're convinced internally that the smart-ass attitude would settle down considerably if someone just knocked some sense into the jerk.)

Obviously, some people have problems maintaining that rational connection when they're provoked, and some of those people are police officers. How much time and training would it take, and how much would it cost, to implement additional anger management training, or to identify individuals with a predisposition to these disconnects?

Thoughts?

(Also...24 times? How many times do you have to reload before it's obvious you're no longer in mortal peril? It's good to see some semblance of justice might be at hand, but it's disappointing how many people have had to suffer.)

^ Yeah, it seems like there needs to be some limit. I'm pretty sure that two nine mil rounds to center mass will put even a meth head into shock.

So maybe we should adopt some rule that if you put more bullets directly into a person (not just firing but hitting) than your gun can hold and have to reload to keep shooting them, you can't claim self defense. Temporary insanity maybe but self-defense? And another police department hired him while he was still suspended? WTF? What does a person have to do?

So, what we're saying here is that "police defending their own" allowed this man to commit murder, rape and assault on a minor.

The common thread appears to be putting people with barely a highschool diploma and no experience that provides them the ability to cope with stress into positions of ultimate authority and then blindly defending their behavior as part of a 'code'.
